Shaq's Towering Pay.

Lakers See Lake poets  superstar Shaquille O'Neal Shaquille Rashaun O'Neal (pronounced "shak-KEEL") (born March 6, 1972 in Newark, New Jersey), frequently referred to simply as Shaq, is an American professional basketball player, generally regarded as one of the most dominant in the National Basketball Association (NBA).  recently signed a three-year, $88.4 million contact extension through 2006 that in its final year will pay the all-star center $32.4 million. Since the deal makes him one of the highest-paid athletes ever, the Business Journal asks:

Is Shaq worth all that money?

David Cremin

Clearly he's worth it. They run a pretty sharp business. I don't think they would have offered it without thinking it through first. Now Shaq should go fund some startups to invest in.

The more important tense is future: Will Shaq be worth it? If he plays like he did last season for every year of the contract, then the Lakers actually got a bargain -- especially if he starts making over 60 percent of his free throws consistently. And Laker lak·er

Yes, I think he's worth it. It's not his cost, but the dollar figure and the payback he will command by his presence alone. That's the name of the game. I was just looking at some pre-season tickets, and it's $70 for slightly above-average seats. That couldn't happen without Shaq.

I'm a huge sports fan, but I'm not a Lakers fan. Shaq's new contract is representative of what I don't like about the organization. It's all about money, and the show they can put on. It's pretty much impossible for a normal sports fan and their family to go to a game and actually see it.

He's absolutely worth it. I think the Lakers and Shaq know what they're doing.

The Lakers organization has always put a premium on winning championships. The best way to do that is to sign the best players in the league, and that's what Shaq is. He's the main ingredient in the team they've got going. Without Shaq, there won't be any more championships for awhile.

I do. He's just great value.

I have no idea. If somebody is willing to pay him that kind of money, then he's probably worth it.
