Shapers of the Great Debate on the Civil War: A Biographical Dictionary is a collection of nineteen brief biographies (usually ten to twenty-five pages) detailing the lives of key figures in the Civil War era who "participated in the public discussion on almost all of the controversial issues of the day" (p. xxiv). The biographical essays on individuals like Harriet Beecher Stowe and Jefferson Davis highlight personal ideologies and major life events for each figure. This volume also contains an introduction and an appendix containing over 160 paragraph-size biographies of figures like Mafia Isabella "Belle" Boyd and Irvin McDowell Irvin McDowell (October 15, 1818 – May 10, 1885) was an American military officer, famous for his loss of the first large-scale battle of the American Civil War, the First Battle of Bull Run.

McDowell was born in Columbus, Ohio.
