Shaking hands for history's sake: an executive note.

Being Baptist is more than a fad on the landscape of religious history. When the elements of the Baptist way are activated to the fullest, the movement inherently possesses a permanent significance as a dynamic expression of New Testament Christianity.

Baptists today need resources that go to the heart of their story. Therefore, the Southern Baptist Noun 1. Southern Baptist - a member of the Southern Baptist Convention

Historical Society and the Whitsitt Baptist Heritage Society, both passionate about presenting historic Baptist ideals, have shaken hands, committed money, and launched a new pamphlet series: The Baptist Way Series.

Comprised of nine pamphlets, this new series is important for two reasons: (1) it represents a joint effort by two major Baptist historical societies to coalesce co·a·lesce

The basic assumption of the series is that Baptist heritage is worth sharing with Baptists at large, and, indeed, with the broader world. Biblical themes flowing throughout the Baptist story are ripe for telling.

The titles of the pamphlets follow:

* "Doing the Baptist Way for 400 Years: Pivotal Points and Principles Along the Way"

* "Doing Faith the Baptist Way: Voluntarism voluntarism

Metaphysical or psychological system that assigns a more predominant role to the will (Latin, voluntas) than to the intellect. Christian philosophers who have been described as voluntarist include St. Augustine, John Duns Scotus, and Blaise Pascal.
"

* "Doing Freedom the Baptist Way: Liberty of Conscience"

* "Doing Authority the Baptist Way: The Bible"

* "Doing Baptism the Baptist Way: Believer's Baptism Believer's baptism (also called credobaptism, from the Latin word credo meaning "I believe") is the Christian ritual of baptism given to adults and children who have made a declaration of their personal faith in Jesus Christ as their Savior. "

* "Doing Ministry the Baptist Way: The Priesthood of All Believers The general priesthood or the priesthood of all believers, as it would come to be known in the present day, is a Christian doctrine believed to be derived from several passages of the New Testament. It is a foundational concept of Protestantism. "

* "Doing Missions the Baptist Way: A Passion for the Gospel"

* "Doing Church the Baptist Way: Congregationalism Congregationalism, type of Protestant church organization in which each congregation, or local church, has free control of its own affairs. The underlying principle is that each local congregation has as its head Jesus alone and that the relations of the various "

* "Doing Diversity the Baptist Way: Major Variations"

Writers for the series, currently being enlisted, represent some of the finest Baptist historians in America. We have carefully chosen writers for whom being Baptist is both a scholarly adventure and a passionate way of life. We are asking all writers to write from their heads and their hearts.

Our goal is to provide materials for churches that will educate readers in some of the finest and most defining historic values of Baptists. Read more about the pamphlets in 2000 issues of Baptist Heritage Update (SBHS SBHS San Benito High School (Hollister, California)
