Del Nightingale and Tom Flanagan become friends at an exclusive school. After graduation, Del, who has ambitions to become a great magician, invites Tom to spend the summer with him at his uncle's summer home. The home, known as Shadowland, is located in the Vermont woods and is presided over by Coleman Collins, a magician. Collins sees in Tom the makings of a great magician, and proceeds to show the boys a summer of mystery, illusions and possibly much more than they were prepared for. As the secrets of Shadowland unfold and Collins begins to show a terrifyingly dark side, the boys decide that they have to escape if they are to survive.
