Using the visual arts to combine education and entertainment is proving to be a strategic way of reaching wider audiences with sensitive issues. "Edutainment" strategies are used to initiate behavioural change, redress political injustice and raise awareness. However, performance arts cannot be the sole vehicle for change. Instead they rely on engagement and linkages with other organisations, government agencies, community groups and other stakeholders. Particular attention is given to performance arts groups in India, New York City, Nicaragua, the Philippines and Zimbabwe. These groups cover everything from soap operas, street theatre, music, films, puppet theatre and clowns. Most of them take on various aspects of HIV/MDS prevention and awareness, including peer education, general awareness and STDs.
