Setting up a legislative day. (Government Relations).

One of the best ways to get members connected to the legislative process and their legislators is to plan a day at the capitol Capitol, seat of the U.S. Congress

can make an impression. Perhaps more importantly, a legislative day can help your association develop relationships. Even a brief meeting between members and legislators can make it much easier down the road for members to contact legislators when needed and to get legislators to see the association as a player in the legislative process.

Timing is everything

If you will be lobbying on a particular issue, it is important to schedule your event before a critical hearing or vote but not so far in advance that legislators forget your message. If my organization doesn't have a specific pending issue to discuss, I like being one of the first groups in a new session to hold an event. With dozens of events (breakfasts, luncheons, dinners, receptions, and so forth) happening during this time, it is easier to stand out if your event is one of the first.

We reserve a date for a legislative breakfast in the hallway outside the room used for the morning caucus caucus: see convention.  of the majority party. In our case, this space must be reserved but is available without cost on a first-come, first-served “FCFS” redirects here.  basis. Because we hold our event on the first Thursday of each legislative session, it has become a tradition among legislators. Invitations to the breakfast are hand- delivered to each legislator's office on the previous Tuesday.

Be prepared

Prepare both your members and the legislators. Send letters to legislators indicating that your members will be at the capitol on a given day. If you have an issue you want to discuss, include it in your communication.

As for your members, make sure they are aware of the association's agenda in advance. If you have issues you want them to discuss, be sure they understand the organization's position. If we have particular issues to address, we provide written information on the issue and talking points well in advance.

In addition to our breakfast, we hold a legislative briefing later in the day if we have particular issues to discuss. At noon, many of our members rejoin re·join 1

The sky is the limit

You can create many other opportunities for interaction that may prove successful on a legislative day. Have a legislator LEGISLATOR. One who makes laws.
