Set sail for a unique show; Outdoor theatre takes on a whole new meaning next week when a production opens on the banks of the Tyne. Entertainment Editor GORDON BARR has the details.

SHIPBUILDING may have gone, but the banks of the Tyne at Wallsend will be heaving with activity next week.

Not content with having the likes of the Pet Shop Boys perform at Swan Hunter Swan Hunter, formerly known as "Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson", was one of the best known shipbuilding companies in the United Kingdom. Based in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, the company was responsible for some of the greatest ships of the early 20th century — most  in 1996, an outdoor theatre production will take over Oceana at Davy Bank from next Thursday for two weeks of performances.

Audiences will be taken on a Beautiful Journey as Wildworks stage a promenade performance there - you follow the action rather than sit in one place.

Wildworks is an international company of artists, musicians and theatre makers who create large-scale theatre events in unusual sites working with the people who live and work there.

The Beautiful Journey is set in the not-sodistant future. Something has happened. Humanity is on the move, an exodus into the unknown.

It's a world of strange comfort where a mythic Queen hosts bizarre entertainment. She welcomes us, keeps us safe and asks only one thing, that we will never leave her.

During this two-hour theatrical experience we are free to explore Kalypso's surreal world, where hairdressers tell your fortune, gardeners mourn mourn

This future world is a place where we can experience the Memory Projector, be photographed against a future of your choice, dance under lights powered by bicycles and explore Kassandra's extensive collection of oceans.

The Beautiful Journey features film, food, flowers and hope. "The seed of The Beautiful Journey was planted over two years ago, when someone said to me 'climate change, it could be the making of us'," says director Bill Mitchell

"The phrase haunted me and I wanted to make a piece of work to understand it.

"The Beautiful Journey is an adventure into the future and asks questions about what we value and what we do next."

It will be performed at Oceana, against the backdrop of the Tyne, from July 28 to August 8. The site is steeped in maritime history Maritime history is a broad thematic element of global history. As an academic subject, it crosses the boundaries of standard disciplines, focusing on understanding mankind's various relationships to the oceans, seas, and major waterways of the globe.  as it used to be The Parsons and Marine Engineering Turbine Research and Development Association founded in 1944. The main aim of the research association was to carry out shore-based tests on turbine machinery gearing, boilers and auxiliaries.

In 2006 the Oceana Group acquired the site with the specific intention of sympathetically renovating all the buildings and encouraging working people back into the area.

The Beautiful Journey will feature an international and local cast, live music and choirs. Each performance will involve up to 30 professional performers, musicians, makers and technicians who will work alongside as many as 120 local people.
