Business Editors/Hi-Tech Writers

COLUMBIA, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 26, 2001

The company offered its own interface through modem access that featured Internet email.  developer, Sequoia Software Corporation (Nasdaq:SQSW), today announced it has commenced the Beta program for the Java version of XPS (1) See XML Paper Specification.

Sequoia's XPS for Unix is based on the Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) A platform from Sun for building distributed enterprise applications. J2EE services are performed in the middle tier between the user's machine and the enterprise's databases and legacy information systems. ) specification. By combining the openness of Sequoia's XML-pure architecture with Java, XPS for Unix will be extremely portable, offering support for a wide range of J2EE application A J2EE application or an enterprise application is any deployable unit of J2EE functionality. This can be a single J2EE module or a group of modules packaged into an EAR file along with a J2EE application deployment descriptor.  servers, as well as streamlined connectivity with third-party applications within and beyond the enterprise.

"The portal has emerged as the dominant platform for all areas of e-business, a fact reinforced by the marquee list of customers comprising Sequoia's current and beta customers," said Nathaniel Palmer, chief analyst and vice president, Delphi Group. "Supporting inter-enterprise e-business applications requires a portal framework that supports both J2EE and the Microsoft environment already addressed by XPS."

Sequoia Software's XPS lets businesses streamline and automate even complicated business operations, providing a single window through which anyone in the enterprise can interact with partners, vendors, customers and fellow employees in real time, achieving results in seconds instead of days. XPS currently operates on Microsoft Windows NT/2000-based servers. Following the release of XPS for Unix, Sequoia will develop and maintain versions of XPS for both leading platforms.

"More and more businesses are making portal software a key component of their e-business strategy," said Mark Wesker, President and Chief Operating Officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

, Sequoia Software. "To effectively address both the Windows NT/2000 and Unix segments of this growing market, Sequoia will offer products that are native for both of these dominant platforms. The bottom line is that most Microsoft shops won't run Java-based applications on NT, and Unix customers prefer a pure Java-based solution."
