BEAVERTON, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 17, 1998--

Strategic Partnership Provides OpenLink Universal

Data Access Drivers for Sequent NUMA-Q 2000 Customers

Sequent Computer Systems Inc. announced today its partnership with OpenLink Software Inc. to provide Universal Data Access technology for its NUMA-Q(TM) 2000 and previous generation Symmetry servers running DYNIX/ptx(R) 4.x UNIX UNIX

Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics).
.

OpenLink Software's Universal Data Access Suite gives Sequent customers the ability to deploy enterprise-wide server-based data access solutions to all ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) A database programming interface from Microsoft that provides a common language for Windows applications to access databases on a network.  (Open Database Connectivity See ODBC.

) compliant database systems and achieve lower total cost of ownership. Server-based universal data access allows a customer to deploy an application to thousands of users and operate it at a fraction of the cost of managing and updating individual desktops in a client-based solution.

This partnership will offer Sequent customers a certified version of OpenLink's High-Performance Data Access Suite -- comprised of Java(TM) Database Connectivity (JDBC (Java DataBase Connectivity) A programming interface that lets Java applications access a database via the SQL language. Since Java interpreters (Java Virtual Machines) are available for all major client platforms, this allows a platform-independent database (TM)), Open Database Connectivity (ODBC(TM)), and X/Open SQL CLI based Drivers for the DYNIX/ptx platform.

Sequent Computer Systems selected OpenLink Software's Data Access Driver Suite for its ease of use, scalability, multiple database support, and advanced security features for implementing database access applications.

OpenLink Software's Driver Suite supports the following database engines: Oracle (7 and 8), Informix (5, 6, and 7), Sybase, CA-OpenIngres, Progress, Unify 2000 and others.

"This new product release facilitates the development and deployment of robust dynamic database driven Internet, Intranet, and Extranet solutions on Sequent's successful NUMA-Q platform," said Kingsley Idehen, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of OpenLink Software Inc. "The availability of our Data Access Driver Suite on NUMA-Q is a major enabler to the continuing trend of centralization and the growth of server-based deployments," he added.

"The combination of Sequent NUMA-Q architecture with the OpenLink High-Performance Data Access Suite technology provides standards-based, powerful, and scalable database access solutions to both our current and future customers," said Martyn Etherington, director of marketing development for Sequent Computer Systems.
