Seowon University Deploys Nortel Wireless Mesh Network Solution; Transforming Campus into Mobile 'Hotzone' for Indoor/Outdoor Network Access.

SEOUL, Korea -- Korea's Seowon University has deployed the country's second Wireless Mesh Network solution from Nortel (NYSE:NT) (TSX:NT) to create a campus-wide 'hotzone' providing seamless and secure wireless communications for faculty and staff. Seowon is a major private university located in Chongju, the capital of Korea's North Chungchong Province.

Nortel's Wireless Mesh Network solution has made it possible for Seowon to provide wireless access to the public Internet and university network, indoors and outdoors, through an enhanced wireless local area network (WLAN) architecture. For the first time, students and faculty will be able to use laptops and handheld computing devices to access network resources across the entire campus, including two major dormitories. Nortel's nPower channel partner ISE Information implemented the network.

Nortel's Wireless Mesh Network solution uses wireless links to connect access points installed inside or outside to provide secure, seamless access to wireless broadband services. This solution allows enterprises and service providers to install wireless LANs in areas where it is difficult or cost prohibitive to run cables. This innovative approach can drastically reduce the complexity and cost of deploying a traditional wireless LAN.

Nortel's Wireless Mesh Network solution is designed to provide network and user security along with mobility so users can securely and continuously access the network while moving about the campus. The Wireless Mesh Network solution for Seowon University includes Nortel Wireless Access Point 7220 and Wireless Gateway 7250. Because the solution uses IEEE 802.11 standards, users with Wi-Fi enabled laptop computers or handheld computing devices can access the network without new hardware or software.

Nortel's wireless mesh solution is attracting growing interest among universities around the world, with deployments at Edith Cowan University in Australia and the University of Arkansas in the United States, as well as field trials at Taiwan's National University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the U.S.
