Seowon University Deploys Nortel Wireless Mesh Network Solution; Transforming Campus into Mobile 'Hotzone' for Indoor/Outdoor Network Access.

SEOUL, Korea -- Korea's Seowon University has deployed the country's second Wireless Mesh Network (1) A network that relies on all nodes to propagate signals. Although the wireless signal may start at some base station (access point) attached to a wired network, a wireless mesh network extends the transmission distance by relaying the signal from one computer to another.  solution from Nortel (NYSE NYSE

For the first time, students and faculty will be able to use laptops and handheld computing devices to access network resources across the entire campus, including two major dormitories. Nortel's nPower channel partner ISE Ise (ē`sā), city (1990 pop. 104,164), Mie prefecture, S Honshu, Japan, on Ise Bay. "Our Wireless Mesh Network solution is ideal for a university campus setting, providing inherent security for information as well as a cost-effective and reliable solution that minimizes cabling requirements through radio backhaul technology," said Soo-jin Chung, managing director, Nortel Korea.

"This deployment of our wireless mesh network technology in Korea is a significant milestone in enhancing the human experience through communications technology Noun 1. communications technology - the activity of designing and constructing and maintaining communication systems

," Chung said. "Prior to the Seowon University deployment, the Black Stone Golf & Resort was Korea's first Nortel wireless mesh network contract signed, and we anticipate interest from other educational institutions, businesses and government agencies that see the productivity and profitability benefits of this compelling wireless broadband High-speed wireless transmission of data. What is "high" speed is always a changing number. Wireless systems are typically slower than land-based, wireline networks. In the past, wireless broadband started at 250 Kbps, whereas land-based broadband was generally considered to start at T1  solution."

Nortel's Wireless Mesh Network solution uses wireless links to connect access points installed inside or outside to provide secure, seamless access to wireless broadband services. This solution allows enterprises and service providers to install wireless LANs in areas where it is difficult or cost prohibitive to run cables. This innovative approach can drastically reduce the complexity and cost of deploying a traditional wireless LAN.

Nortel's Wireless Mesh Network solution is designed to provide network and user security along with mobility so users can securely and continuously access the network while moving about the campus. The Wireless Mesh Network solution for Seowon University includes Nortel Wireless Access Point 7220 and Wireless Gateway 7250. Because the solution uses IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  802.11 standards, users with Wi-Fi enabled laptop computers or handheld computing devices can access the network without new hardware or software.

Nortel's wireless mesh solution is attracting growing interest among universities around the world, with deployments at Edith Cowan University in Australia and the University of Arkansas The University of Arkansas strives to be known as a "nationally competitive, student-centered research university serving Arkansas and the world." The school recently completed its "Campaign for the 21st Century," in which the university raised more than $1 billion for the school, used  in the United States, as well as field trials at Taiwan's National University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Massachusetts Institute of Technology, at Cambridge; coeducational; chartered 1861, opened 1865 in Boston, moved 1916. It has long been recognized as an outstanding technological institute and its Sloan School of Management has notable programs in business,  (MIT MIT - Massachusetts Institute of Technology ) in the U.S.
