Send fear flying.Q I am currently working at a job that l despise. My dream is to become a cosmetologist and own my own salon. To some people,, its not much. hot it s what I want to do. I've heard so many negative things that I'm afraid to really go after my dreams. Do you have any advice for me? --S. McNair Joliet, Illinois A What kind of negative things? "You'll never do it?" "Why in the world would throw away a good, professional job to do that?" "Are you crazy?" Sound familiar? I'm sure they do; we've all heard some version of them at some point in our lives. Unless the discouragements are warnings to protect you from bodily harm or loss of life. the opinions of others shouldn't deter you from trying your hand at what would make you happy. Don't allow it. Fear is a perfectly natural reaction to new experiences. You can harness the energy of fear and use it to your benefit, or you can let that energy overwhelm you and send you running scared. For example, the nervous energy that comes before most people speak in public can be used toward a more dynamic opening. Many people, however, allow that nervousness to overwhelm them, and it takes the form of stage fright. If you'd be happier working at your own beauty shop, then get to it. The first step in your career starts in your mind. If you believe strongly enough that you can do it, you surely will. --R.D.C.
