Senate committee begins review of mental health issues. (Health).


OTTAWA -- Mental health and mental illness are the next targets of the Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology. The Committee, chaired by Liberal Senator Michael Kirby Michael Kirby refers to:

 has been reviewing major health care issues since December 1999. Deputy Chair of the committee is Senator Marjory LeBreton Marjory LeBreton, P.C. (born July 4 1940) is a Canadian Senator and vice-chair of Mothers Against Drunk Driving in Canada. She was a senior political advisor in the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada and was appointed by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney to the Senate on June 18 .

In Volume Two of the recent study on the state of Canada's health care system, the Committee reported that the economic burden of mental health problems and illnesses was found to:

* cost approximately $14 billion annually,

* be the seventh highest among all diseases in terms of the overall cost of illness,

* be the second-leading cause of hospital use among those aged 20 to 44, a period of life normally associated with high productivity.

Based on this evidence, the Committee was convinced that a more in depth analysis of mental health and illnesses issues was necessary. The Committee has begun a series of roundtables.

In her working life, Cook was, variously, a businesswoman who served as vice-president of her family's automobile dealership, Cook and Jones Motors, an
, Jane Cordy Jane Marie Cordy, BEd (born July 2 1950) is a Canadian Senator representing Nova Scotia.

Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, she received a teaching certificate from the Nova Scotia Teachers College and a Bachelor of Education from Mount Saint Vincent University.
