In Volume Two of the recent study on the state of Canada's health care system, the Committee reported that the economic burden of mental health problems and illnesses was found to: * cost approximately $14 billion annually, * be the seventh highest among all diseases in terms of the overall cost of illness, * be the second-leading cause of hospital use among those aged 20 to 44, a period of life normally associated with high productivity. Based on this evidence, the Committee was convinced that a more in depth analysis of mental health and illnesses issues was necessary. The Committee has begun a series of roundtables.
