Sen. Bill Frist, M.D. (Power Play).


When U.S. Senators are feeling a little under the weather, they might find a sudden reason to meet with their colleagues, Sen. Bill Frist (R-Tenn.). The two-term senator is the first practicing physician elected to the Senate since 1928, and has made public health one of his signature issues. After last fall's terrorist attacks, he completed the Marine Corps Marathon, which runs past the Pentagon, and the New York City Marathon The New York City Marathon is an annual marathon foot-race run over a 42,195 m (26.2 mile) course through all five boroughs of New York City. It is the largest marathon race in the world, and with 37,866 finishers in 2006, was also the largest marathon race ever run. .

Sen. Frist: In the daily work of the Senate, we face many important and pressing issues that can divert attention away from problems that may, on the surface, appear to be less critical. However, when the long-term effects and magnitude of the problems associated with the growing prevalence of obesity are pointed out, my colleagues respond quickly to address the problem and look for viable solutions.

 for others. What role have parks and recreation facilities played in your own development of a healthy lifestyle?

Sen. Frist: Just this Fourth of July Fourth of July, Independence Day, or July Fourth, U.S. holiday, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Celebration of it began during the American Revolution. , I hiked to the top of Mt. LeConte in the Great Smoky Smoky, river, c.250 mi (400 km) long, rising in Jasper National Park, W Alta., Canada, and flowing generally NE to the Peace River. It receives the Wapiti and Little Smoky rivers. It was explored (1792) by Alexander Mackenzie.  National Park, with my oldest son, Harrison. My family and I have always enjoyed the outdoors and the serene beauty of our national parks, and regularly visit parks like the Smokies for recreation and physical activity. It's a great way to spend time with family and get some exercise.
