Semtech Launches 11 New High-Speed ECL Logic Solutions.Business Editors/High-Tech Writers NEWBURY PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 20, 1999 ECL (Emitter-Coupled Logic) A digital circuit composed of bipolar transistors in which the emitter ends are wired together. ECL gates switch faster than TTL gates, but consume more power. See TTL, I2L and bipolar. 1. Logic Families Offer High-Performance, Low-Power and Low-Noise ECL Logic Product Replacements for Next-Generation Telecommunications, High End PC and Workstation Equipment Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq:SMTC SMTC Southern Maine Technical College SMTC Science/Mathematics/Technology Center (Central Michigan University) SMTC Saluda Mountain Telephone Company (Knoxville, Tennessee) SMTC Short-To-Medium Term Control ), a leader in analog and mixed-signal ICs, today announced its ECL Logic series of high-speed, low-skew ECL and PECL PECL PEAR (PHP Extension and Application Repository) Extended Code Language PECL Principles of European Contract Law PECL Positive Emitter Coupled Logic PECL Pseudo-Emitter Coupled Logic PECL Positive-Referenced Emitter Coupled Logic logic IC families including new 1:9- and 1:10-output clock driver ICs, differential receivers for multiple-voltage applications, a PECL to CMOS/TTL translator, a 9-bit shift register, and a 4-bit flip flop. All members of the new Semtech ECL Logic series offer equivalent or higher performance and full pin compatibility with competitive standard ECL and PECL logic products currently available. The 11 new ECL Logic products are the first in a series of devices that Semtech is planning for the ECL and PECL logic markets. Within these markets, high-speed, low-power and low-noise requirements are causing designers of advanced telecommunications, high-end personal computers and workstations to seek clock and receiver upgrades. Semtech designed various members of the ECL Logic family to provide the highest speeds, a range of 3-volt to 5.5-volt operating voltages, on-chip termination and to enable simple socket replacements of similar, older devices without requiring extensive redesigns. "High-speed, low-power applications are placing a huge demand on designers to include the very fastest and accurate ECL logic devices in their designs," said S. L. Chan, director of marketing for Semtech's High Performance Products group. "Unlike older, competitive ECL and PECL devices, the ECL Logic family supplies the highest performance, extremely high integration of the most advanced functions, low skew (1) The misalignment of a document or punch card in the feed tray or hopper that prohibits it from being scanned or read properly. (2) In facsimile, the difference in rectangularity between the received and transmitted page. and jitter A flicker or fluctuation in a transmission signal or display image. The term is used in several ways, but it always refers to some offset of time and space from the norm. For example, in a network transmission, jitter would be a bit arriving either ahead or behind a standard clock cycle , and a wide range of operating voltages making them an extremely cost-effective replacement solution." Chan said the forthcoming SK10/100EL16 family of differential receivers will allow designers to use one device in multiple-voltage requirement situations eliminating the need to buy separate high-speed receivers at different operating voltages. Members of the EL16 receiver family will include devices that offer variable output swing (EL16VS), extra monitoring output (EL16B), and internal termination (EL16T). In addition to the EL16 family, Semtech plans to introduce the SK100ELT ELT English Language Teaching ELT n abbr (Scol) (= English Language Teaching) → Englisch als Unterrichtsfach 23, a dual differential PECL to CMOS/TTL translator. With Complimentary Output Design, this translator will provide a better noise margin at outputs. All EL Products allow the VCC An electronics designation that refers to voltage from a power supply connected to the "collector" terminal of a bipolar transistor. In an NPN bipolar (BJT) transistor, it would be +Vcc, while in a PNP transistor, it would be -Vcc. voltage operating from 3.0V to 5.5V. Semtech's SK10/100 E111 and LVE LVE Low Volume Exemption (EPA) LVE Live Video Extension LVE Linear Variable Etalon LVE Linux Video Editor 111 Clock Drivers Available now, the SK10/100E111, LVE111, and LVE111E differential clock drivers provide 1:9 output with dependably low-skew specifications for high accuracy. The tested within-device skew has been rated at 30 picoseconds (ps) typical or less for the E111 and 25 ps typical for the LVE111 and LVE111E drivers. Semtech's LVE111 and LVE111E are both ECL and PECL drivers that can be used for clock distribution in 3.3-volt systems when operated in PECL mode. An enable-input capability is featured with the LVE111E. All three ICs come in a space-saving 28-pin PLCC (Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier) A plastic, square, surface mount chip package that contains leads on all four sides. The leads (pins) extend down and back under and into tiny indentations in the housing. See chip package. package. 9-Bit Shift Register and 4-Bit D Flip-Flop Along with the 1:9 clock drivers, a 9-bit shift register - the SK10/100E142 - is also now available. Designed for byte-parity applications, the E142 performs serial/parallel in, serial/parallel out operations shifting bits in one direction. The E142 features a 700-MHz minimum shift frequency, an asynchronous Refers to events that are not synchronized, or coordinated, in time. The following are considered asynchronous operations. The interval between transmitting A and B is not the same as between B and C. The ability to initiate a transmission at either end. master reset A master reset is a full restore of a handheld computer (or PDA) to its factory settings. It entails deleting all information stored in the handheld. This is essentially the same as reformatting a hard drive. and dual clocks. Semtech's first wave of ECL Logic products also includes a 4-bit D-type flip-flop (hardware) D-type flip-flop - A digital logic device that stores the status of its "D" input whenever its clock input makes a certain transition (low to high or high to low). The output, "Q", shows the currently stored value. Compare J-K flip-flop. - the SK10/100E131 - that can be clocked separately from other flip-flops and features differential outputs. The minimum toggle To alternate back and forth between two states. toggle - To change a bit from whatever state it is in to the other state; to change from 1 to 0 or from 0 to 1. This comes from "toggle switches", such as standard light switches, though the word "toggle" actually refers to frequency for the E131 is 1100 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. . Both the E142 and E131 are available in a 28-pin PLCC package. SK100EP111 1:10 Clock Driver Semtech's new 1:10 ECL/PECL/HSTL clock driver IC, available next month, is rated at 35-ps within-device skew maximum and 100-ps part-to-part skew maximum, and can be used with either 3.3-volt or 2.5-volt systems. Two clock source inputs can be used which are fanned out to 10 outputs through an input multiplexer See multiplexor and multiplexing. multiplexer - multiplexor . This clock driver will be available in a 32-lead LQFP See QFP. package.
