Semtech Expands Notebook Power-Management Product Line With Efficient, Dual Synchronous Buck Power Supply Controller.

Business Editors & High-Tech Writers

CAMARILLO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 9, 2002

High Efficiency, Low Output Voltage, and an Expansive Array of Cost Cutting Features Give Portable Product Designers a Clear Advantage for

Their Portable Power Supply Circuits

Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq: SMTC SMTC Southern Maine Technical College
SMTC Science/Mathematics/Technology Center (Central Michigan University)
SMTC Saluda Mountain Telephone Company (Knoxville, Tennessee)
SMTC Short-To-Medium Term Control
) a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors for communications, portable devices, computers, and industrial equipment, today announced the SC1485 dual synchronous buck power supply controller. The SC1485 offers an expansive array of features to simplify the design of power supplies for systems demanding high efficiency and small size, including notebook computers A laptop computer that weighs in a range from five to seven pounds. The term originated when laptops were routinely more than 10 pounds, and those that became lighter were placed in a special "notebook" category. In practice, notebook computer and laptop computer are synonymous. , handheld terminals, personal digital assistants, and network equipment. It is also well suited for supplying I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

"The SC1485 represents yet another addition to Semtech's expanding line of feature-rich, cost-effective controllers," said Eddie Yeow, Semtech's director of portable power management products. "This product will help designers meet their goals of increased efficiency and cost reduction through use of dual outputs (adjustable down to 0.5V), constant on-time regulation, RDS (1) (Remote Data Services) A set of programming interfaces from Microsoft that enables users to update data on the Internet or intranets from their ActiveX-enabled browser. (on) current sensing, and Power Save mode."

The SC1485's adjustable output voltage is most noteworthy for its ability to meet the sub-1V requirements of Intel processors. For its part, constant on-time regulation obviates the need for an external error amplifier and achieves excellent transient response In electrical engineering and Mechanical Engineering, a transient response or natural response is the response of a system to a change from equilibrium. Specifically, transient response in Mechanical Engineering is the portion of the response that approaches zero after a , effectively minimizing output capacitance capacitance, in electricity, capability of a body, system, circuit, or device for storing electric charge. Capacitance is expressed as the ratio of stored charge in coulombs to the impressed potential difference in volts.  requirements thereby cutting the bill-of-material costs compared to other fixed-frequency type controllers.

Pseudo-fixed frequency operation, which fixes its switching frequency under steady-state conditions In telecommunication, the term steady-state condition has the following meanings:
  • In a communications circuit, a condition in which some specified characteristic of a condition, such as a value, rate, periodicity, or amplitude, exhibits only negligible change over an
, and varies its switching frequency to accommodate transient events like load or line changes, is available independently in each section of the dual controller. The resistor-programmed frequency ranges from 100 kHz to 600 kHz offering designers the flexibility to optimize their power supply circuit for high efficiency, small filter size, and low EMI/RFI emissions.

Sensing output current from the low-side MOSFET's on-resistance, RDS(on), the SC1485 eliminates the cost and power loss of having an external current sense resistor resistor, two-terminal electric circuit component that offers opposition to an electric current. Resistors are normally designed and operated so that, with varying levels of current, variations of their resistance values are negligible (see resistance).  in the load path. (Alternatively, a low-cost resistor can be added for more accurate current sensing.) To achieve high-efficiency operation, the SC1485's Power Save mode skips PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) A modulation technique that generates variable-width pulses to represent the amplitude of an analog input signal. Like its fixed-width pulse density modulation (PDM) cousin, the output switching transistor is on more of the time for a  pulses. In addition, typical current drain drops to 700 uA for quiescent quiescent

operation and just 10 uA during shut down.

Beyond these key features, the SC1485 embodies a wide range of benefits to simplify the designer's job. Among these are an input voltage range that spans from 1.8V to 25V and powerful gate driving circuitry that can deliver 1A and sink 2A, allowing power supplies to deliver up to 10A. The gate drivers also feature adaptive shoot-through protection and soft switching.

Each of the two on-chip controllers has its own Power Good signal, providing flexibility for power sequencing. The SC1485 also includes digital soft start, separate enable lines, and a 1 percent accuracy reference affording 2 percent system DC accuracy. Safety features include undervoltage, overvoltage, and overcurrent protection; cycle-by-cycle current limiting Current limiting is the practice in electrical or electronic circuits of imposing an upper limit on the current that may be delivered to a load with the purpose of protecting the circuit generating or transmitting the current from harmful effects due to a short-circuit or similar , and an operating temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees Celsius.
