Semtech Announces the Latest Addition to Its Line of Products for Notebook Computer Applications; SC1402 Multi-Output Controller Provides System 3.3V, 5V and 12V.

Business Editors & High-Tech Writers

NEWBURY PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 4, 2000

Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq:SMTC SMTC Southern Maine Technical College
SMTC Science/Mathematics/Technology Center (Central Michigan University)
SMTC Saluda Mountain Telephone Company (Knoxville, Tennessee)
SMTC Short-To-Medium Term Control
), a leading supplier of mixed-signal semiconductors for computers, communications, industrial and automated test equipment, today announced availability of the SC1402 Multi-Output, Low Noise Power Supply Controller.

The SC1402 provides a simple, space-saving solution by integrating into a single IC, all control and drive circuitry needed to generate several of the voltages required by notebook PCs, Internet appliances and other handheld devices.

"The SC1402 represents an important addition to Semtech's portfolio of products for notebook computers," said Eddie Yeow, director of Portable Power Management Products for Semtech Corp. "Semtech offers notebook system designers and purchasing managers convenience by providing not only complete power management solutions, but also human input/output devices, system management components and data line protection ICs."

The SC1402 is designed to operate from a 6V to 30V input supply, making it ideal for notebook computer operation from either the battery or AC adapter Same as power adapter. . Two on-board high-efficiency synchronous power supply controllers are preset to generate 3.3V and 5V, or they can be adjusted with a simple resistor resistor, two-terminal electric circuit component that offers opposition to an electric current. Resistors are normally designed and operated so that, with varying levels of current, variations of their resistance values are negligible (see resistance).  divider divider

to provide any voltage between 2.5V and 5.5V.

Each synchronous controller includes drivers capable of supplying 1A of gate drive for switching the latest high-speed MOSFETs. An on-board 12V/120mA linear regulator In electronics, a linear regulator is a voltage regulator based on an active device (such as a bipolar junction transistor, field effect transistor or vacuum tube) operating in its "linear region" (in contrast, a switching regulator is based on a transistor forced to act as an  with built-in over-current and over-voltage protection is also included.

Battery life is an important consideration for notebook computer users, and the SC1402 incorporates several features designed to extend battery life. High-efficiency (95%) synchronous rectification means little battery power is consumed generating the required voltages. If enabled, each controller automatically enters a power-save mode under light load conditions, effectively reducing the switching frequency and associated switching losses.

current consumption to less than 4 micro-amps (typical). Each controller can also be separately enabled or disabled.

The SC1402 meets the power supply sequencing requirements of today's notebook computer designs by offering programmable control over the order and timing of turn-on of the 3.3V and 5V supplies. A reset signal is available to keep downstream circuitry in-check until the power supplies are up and in regulation. The user can select operation at 200kHz for best efficiency, or 300kHz for lowest ripple, fastest transient response In electrical engineering and Mechanical Engineering, a transient response or natural response is the response of a system to a change from equilibrium. Specifically, transient response in Mechanical Engineering is the portion of the response that approaches zero after a  and/or smallest inductor inductor, electric device consisting of one or more turns of wire and typically having two terminals. An inductor is usually connected into a circuit in order to raise the inductance to a desired value.  and output capacitor size.

Other features include tight regulation over line, load and temperature; over-current, over-voltage and over-temperature protection; and under-voltage lockout lockout, intentional closing up of a company, factory, or shop by an employer to prevent employees from working during a strike or labor dispute. Pricing and Availability

The SC1402, in SSOP-28 packaging, is available through Semtech's network of direct sales representatives and distributors, and is priced at $3.95 in 1,000-unit quantities.

Semtech's Family of Products for Notebook and Wireless Applications

Semtech offers a full line of power management solutions for notebook and wireless applications, including switching regulators, ultra low dropout (1) On magnetic media, a bit that has lost its strength due to a surface defect or recording malfunction. If the bit is in an audio or video file, it might be detected by the error correction circuitry and either corrected or not, but if not, it is often not noticed by the human  (ULDO) linear regulators, and charge pumps. Typical features include small package size, low supply current and low power shutdown control, making them ideal for portable, battery-powered applications.
