), a leading supplier of mixed-signal semiconductors for communications, computers and industrial equipment, today announced the availability of the SC1471 PowerStep II(TM), their latest power-supply controller designed specifically for high-performance mobile Pentium See Pentium M. (R) III processor-based notebook applications.

Combined with the SC1405C SmartDriver(TM), the SC1471 provides a core voltage over the 0.600V to 1.75V range at processor currents up to 25 amps.

The SC1471 is designed specifically for mobile Pentium(R) III processors featuring Intel SpeedStep(TM) technology, supporting on-the-fly core voltage changes to provide maximum battery life. The SC1471 meets all of the rigorous timing requirements for transitions between core voltages required for Intel SpeedStep(TM) technology related operation.

The SC1471 also supports enhanced Intel Mobile Voltage Positioning (IMVP IMVP Intel Mobile Voltage Positioning
IMVP International Motor Vehicle Programme
), which reduces power consumption by decreasing the core voltage as the load current increases. This feature is particularly important, not only for increasing battery life, but also for reducing system design costs by reducing the maximum thermal envelope.

IMVP provides a significant advantage over passive droop schemes by dramatically reducing the size of the droop resistor and associated heat (and efficiency) losses while maintaining the high accuracy required by the latest Intel mobile processors.

IMVP also provides an important benefit by increasing the amount of headroom available to accommodate load transients, and thus reducing the amount of required bulk output capacitance. All of the IMVP requirements are met on-chip, without the need for additional external circuitry.

Other features of the SC1405C include adaptive/programmable shoot-through protection; adaptive over-voltage protection; over-temperature protection; under-voltage lockout; and a power good output signal. The SC1405C also provides an enable control, with current consumption less than 10uA under shutdown.

Pricing and Availability

Production-quality SC1405C devices are available now through Semtech's network of direct sales representatives and distributors. Evaluation samples of the SC1471 are available now, with full production scheduled this month. The SC1471 comes in a TSSOP-24 package, while the SC1405C is available in a TSSOP-14 package.
