CAMARILLO, Calif. -- Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq:SMTC SMTC Southern Maine Technical College
SMTC Science/Mathematics/Technology Center (Central Michigan University)
SMTC Saluda Mountain Telephone Company (Knoxville, Tennessee)
SMTC Short-To-Medium Term Control
), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors for communications, portable devices, computers, and industrial equipment, today announced the SC194B, a highly integrated 1A DC-DC DC-DC Direct Current to Direct Current (power conversion)  step-down (buck) regulator with the small size and output flexibility needed for portable device applications.

The SC194B has an input voltage range from 2.7V to 5.5V with a focus on portable applications that use Li-ion batteries. It is a sister part to the recently announced SC194A, which is feature compatible but offers outputs between 1V and 1.8V. The SC194B uses two programming pins to allow engineers to set the output voltage to 2.5V, 3.0V, 3.3V or 3.6V. These pins can be hard-wired to set a constant voltage, or they can be tied to a microcontroller A single chip that contains the processor (the CPU), non-volatile memory for the program (ROM or flash), volatile memory for input and output (RAM), a clock and an I/O control unit.  and dynamically switched for applications that use digital power control.

The highly integrated feature set of the SC194B goes beyond the voltage programming pins which eliminate the need for voltage-setting resistors on the output. The device includes an internal compensation network, integrates the switching Field Effect Transistors See FET.

(FETs), and eliminates the need for an external Schottky diode The Schottky diode (named after German physicist Walter H. Schottky; also known as hot carrier diode) is a semiconductor diode with a low forward voltage drop and a very fast switching action. . Complete power regulation is achieved using only the SC194B and three discrete components, giving the user four output voltage options with a minimal bill of materials The list of components that make up a system. For example, a bill of materials for a house would include the cement block, lumber, shingles, doors, windows, plumbing, electric, heating and so on. .

"The SC194B addresses the I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

voltage rail with the same high performance and small size benefits that the SC194A delivers for the microprocessor core voltage," said Karl Volk, Director of Marketing for Semtech's Handheld Power Management Group. "Not only do the high efficiency and ultra-low quiescent current reduce heat and extend battery life, but the SC194B's digitally-controlled output voltage minimizes PCB PCB: see polychlorinated biphenyl.

area by eliminating external feedback while still allowing our customers to purchase and manage inventory for only one device to meet the 2.5V to 3.6V needs of many designs."

The SC194B is designed for high efficiency at all loads to maximize the battery life. The device features up to 95% maximum efficiency at 3.3V, 200mA output. An automatic power save mode (PSAVE) uses pulse frequency modulation frequency modulation: see modulation; radio.

(PFM) at light loads to maintain very high device efficiency. While in PSAVE mode, the device quiescent current is only 17oA. PSAVE mode operation is monitored such that the device automatically detects when to disable this operation or can be manually taken out of PSAVE mode by toggling a single control pin. This is useful in controlling the electrical noise floor created by a switching regulator topology. Additionally, the flexible clocking scheme allows the engineer to select the internal 1MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  fixed clock or connect the device to an external oscillator oscillator

between 750kHz and 1.25MHz for applications requiring a different frequency or clock synchronization Clock synchronization is a problem from computer science and engineering which deals with the idea that internal clocks of several computers may differ. Even when initially set accurately, real clocks will differ after some amount of time due to clock drift, caused by clocks .

The SC194B has built-in soft-start, short-circuit, over voltage and temperature protection features. Furthermore, fast transient reaction protects sensitive loads from extensive supply voltage variations.

The SC194B comes in a 3mm x 3mm lead-free and RoHS compliant MLP-10 package.
