Semtech's 95% Efficient, 28V Synchronous Buck Controller Delivers Compact, High Power Density DC/DC Converters.

SC4612 delivers 93W per square inch of power with built-in protection features

CAMARILLO, Calif. -- Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq:SMTC SMTC Southern Maine Technical College
SMTC Science/Mathematics/Technology Center (Central Michigan University)
SMTC Saluda Mountain Telephone Company (Knoxville, Tennessee)
SMTC Short-To-Medium Term Control
), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors for communications, portable devices, computers, and industrial equipment, today announced the SC4612, a 28-volt synchronous buck power converter with a wide input range and a programmable 1.2 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  frequency for compact power supply designs.

The SC4612 is a voltage-mode synchronous, PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) A modulation technique that generates variable-width pulses to represent the amplitude of an analog input signal. Like its fixed-width pulse density modulation (PDM) cousin, the output switching transistor is on more of the time for a  controller that operates in a 4.5V to 28V input voltage range and drives external N-channel MOSFETs. The design uses a novel low-voltage technique that enables high-frequency switching with high gate drive. The controller runs at a constant 1.2MHz frequency that can be programmed using an external capacitor. The device's 1.7A gate drive current is capable of driving large MOSFETs resulting in efficient 40A single phase converter 1. (Elec.) The device supports an asynchronous Refers to events that are not synchronized, or coordinated, in time. The following are considered asynchronous operations. The interval between transmitting A and B is not the same as between B and C. The ability to initiate a transmission at either end.  start-up mode to keep the lower side MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor) The most popular and widely used type of field effect transistor (see FET). MOSFETs are either NMOS (n-channel) or PMOS (p-channel) transistors, which are fabricated as individually packaged  turned off until output is within regulation so that the external bus is not discharged. This is an ideal feature for applications with preset external voltage or pre-biased output voltage. Built-in cross conduction conduction, transfer of heat or electricity through a substance, resulting from a difference in temperature between different parts of the substance, in the case of heat, or from a difference in electric potential, in the case of electricity.  prevention circuitry prevents shoot-through minimizing dead time and losses.

"Datacom and server designs face increased power requirements in a limited space and call for a solution like the SC4612 to allow system designers to increase their port density while shrinking board size," said Nejo Necar, Vice President of Marketing for Semtech's Power Management Group. "The SC4612's synchronous rectified buck topology results in 95% peak efficiency that enables industry leading compact on-board dc to dc converter In electronic engineering, a DC to DC converter is a circuit which converts a source of direct current (DC) from one voltage level to another. It is a class of power converter.  designs with 93W/sq. inch of power density."

SC4612 features programmable current limit with built-in hiccup hiccup or hiccough, involuntary spasmodic contraction of the diaphragm followed by a sharp intake of air, which is abruptly stopped by a sudden, involuntary closing of the glottis (opening between the vocal cords); the consequent blocking of air  mode and over temperature protection. It is available in either an MLPD-12 or a SOIC-14 package in lead-free versions that meet RoHS/WEEE specifications.
