Semi-implantable hearing device.

Symphonix Devices, Inc., has incorporated a new digital signal processing See DSP.

Digital Signal Processing - (DSP) Computer manipulation of analog signals (commonly sound or image) which have been converted to digital form (sampled).
(DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive ) technology into its Vibrant [R] Soundbridge [TM] semi-implantable hearing device. The advanced, eight-channel DSP technology was developed by Siemens Audiologische Technik GmbH and has been licensed to Symphonix as part of a technology agreement finalized See finalization.  in 1999. The Vibrant Soundbridge is designed to treat moderate to severe sensorineural hearing loss Sensorineural hearing loss

. This enhancement offers healthcare professionals greater flexibility in programming the Vibrant Soundbridge and positions the device for future upgrades.

The Vibrant Soundbridge will now be programmed using Siemens' PC-based CONNEXX [TM] fitting software, which is used by audiologists worldwide to program Siemens' hearing aids Hearing Aids Definition

A hearing aid is a device that can amplify sound waves in order to help a deaf or hard-of-hearing person hear sounds more clearly.
. This should minimize training requirements for programming the device.

Another advantage: The DSP technology is housed in the externally worn Audio Processor portion of the Vibrant Soundbridge, so current users will be able to update their systems easily and without further surgery.
