Selma Jeanne Cohen (1920-2005).

 dance scholar, Dr. Selma Jeanne Cohen Selma Jeanne Cohen (September 18 1920 – December 23 2005) was a dance historian, editor, and teacher who devoted her career to advocating dance as an art worthy of the same scholarly respect traditionally awarded to painting, music, and literature.  died in December in Manhattan. She was the founding editor of the monumentally ambitious six-volume International Encyclopedia of Dance (Oxford University Press, 1998).

 Times, and The Saturday Review. In 1959 she co-founded Dance Perspectives, a journal on dance of all cultures. Her books include the innovative (and beloved) The Modern Dance: Seven Statements of Belief, which contains essays by major modern dancers. Dance as a Theater Art, an invaluable survey for courses in dance history, spans nearly 500 years of changing dance aesthetics through the writings of artists like Noverre, Petipa, Fokine, Ashton, Duncan, and Cunningham.

Dr. Cohen, a 1981 Dance Magazine Award recipient, encouraged countless dance writers and historians to follow their passion. She inspired the founding of The Society of Dance History Scholars The Society of Dance History Scholars (SDHS) is a professional organization for dance historians in the United States and worldwide. Founded in 1978, it became a non-profit organization in 1983. , an organization that now gives an award in her name.
