Hull, Que. -- A large group of self-employed people aged 15 to 69 have no extended health, dental and disability insurance plans. An article in Perspectives, a Statistics Canada publication reports that in 2000, 41% of the nearly 2.1 million self-employed Canadians had no coverage in any of the three health-related insurance plans. Most cited cost as the main reason for non-coverage. Only about 17%--mostly well-educated and with high employment income ($60,000 or more)--had coverage in all three plans. A large proportion of the self-employed acquire coverage in health and dental plans by piggybacking Gaining access to a restricted communications channel by using the session another user already established.
