HYPERTENSION

* TREATMENT OF HYPERTENSION WITH TWO EXERCISE INTENSITIES.

This study will determine whether exercise training can significantly replace medication as a treatment for mild essential hypertension. Both men and women aged 18 to 75 years are eligible.

* PREMIER: LIFESTYLE INTERVENTIONS FOR BLOOD PRESSURE CONTROL.

This Phase III, multicenter study will compare the effectiveness of advice versus two multicomponent lifestyle interventions to control blood pressure in participants with Stage 1 hypertension or higher than optimal blood pressure. Both men and women aged 25 years and older who are generally healthy except for higher than optimal or mildly elevated blood pressure are eligible.

BREAST CANCER

* COMBINATION CHEMOTHERAPY IN TREATING WOMEN WITH BREAST CANCER THAT IS METASTATIC Metastatic

This Phase II, multicenter study will examine the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy in treating women who have breast cancer that is metastatic or cannot be treated with surgery. Women aged 18 years and older who have histologically confirmed breast cancer, metastatic or unresectable local disease, are eligible.

COLORECTAL CANCER

* COMPARISON OF BARIUM ENEMA, COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHIC COLONOGRAPHY, AND COLONOSCOPY IN DETECTING COLON CANCER.

This diagnostic and screening, multicenter trial will compare the effectiveness of barium enema, computed tomographic colonography, and colonoscopy in detecting colon cancer. Both men and women aged 18 years and older who have had at least one positive fecal occult blood test Fecal Occult Blood Test Definition

The fecal occult blood test (FOBT) is performed as part of the routine physical examination during the examination of the rectum.

* HIGH-DOSE FOLIC ACID IN PREVENTING COLORECTAL CANCER IN PATIENTS WHO HAVE HAD POLYPS Polyps
A tumor with a small flap that attaches itself to the wall of various vascular organs such as the nose, uterus and rectum. Polyps bleed easily, and if they are suspected to be cancerous they should be surgically removed.

 trial will study the effectiveness of high-dose folic acid in preventing colorectal cancer in patients who have had polyps surgically removed within 18 months of the trial. * CELECOXIB TO PREVENT COLORECTAL CANCER IN PATIENTS WHO HAVE UNDERGONE SURGERY TO REMOVE POLYPS.

This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, clinical trial will determine the effectiveness of celecoxib in preventing the development of adenomatous polyps in patients who have had at least one polyp polyp, in medicine, a benign tumor occurring in areas lined with mucous membrane such as the nose, gastrointestinal tract (especially the colon), and the uterus. Some polyps are pedunculated tumors, i.e.  removed. Both men and women aged 30 years and older with at least one prior colorectal adenomatous polyp removed by polypectomy within the past 5 months are eligible.

* EFLORNITHINE PLUS SULINDAC IN PREVENTING A RECURRENCE OF COLORECTAL CANCER IN PATIENTS WHO HAVE HAD SURGERY TO REMOVE BENIGN COLORECTAL POLYPS.

This Phase II, randomized, double-blind trial will determine the efficacy of eflornithine plus sulindac compared to a placebo in preventing colorectal cancer in patients who have had surgery to remove benign col orectal polyps. Both men and women aged 40 to 80 years with at least one prior resected colorectal adenoma within the past 5 years are eligible.

PROSTATE CANCER

* DIET AND PSA (Professional Services Automation) An information system designed to organize, track and manage all opportunities, work, resources, costs, revenues and invoices to improve the productivity and efficiency of the workforce.  LEVELS IN PATIENTS WITH PROSTATE CANCER.

This is a two-year, Phase III, randomized trial that will compare how two diets differing in fat, fiber, soy, fruit, vegetable, vitamin E, and green tea content affect prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in patients with prostate cancer. Men aged 18 years and older with histologically confirmed adenocarcinoma of the prostate are eligible.

* EFLORNITHINE IN TREATING MEN AT HIGH RISK OF DEVELOPING PROSTATE CANCER.

This is a Phase II, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study that will determine the effectiveness of eflornithine in preventing prostate cancer in men who are at high risk of developing the disease. Men aged 45 to 70 years with an unaffected brother or first degree cousin of a young prostate cancer proband proband /pro·band/ (pro´band) an affected person ascertained independently of relatives in a genetic study.

* CHEMOTHERAPY PLUS RADIATION THERAPY IN TREATING PATIENTS WITH NON-SMALL-CELL LUNG CANCER.

This Phase I trial will study the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy plus radiation therapy in treating patients who have stage IIIA IIIA Internet Information Infrastructure Architecture

This screening and diagnostic study will determine the ability of computed tomography to detect early lung parenchymal pa·ren·chy·ma

* OLTIPRAZ IN THE PREVENTION OF LUNG CANCER IN PEOPLE WHO SMOKE.

This randomized, Phase I trial will study the effectiveness of oltipraz in preventing lung cancer in people who smoke. Both men and women aged 18 years and older who currently smoke at least 20 cigarettes a day and have done so for at least 10 years are eligible.

CANCER

* PHYSICIAN-INITIATED STOP-SMOKING PROGRAM FOR EARLY-STAGE CANCER PATIENTS.

This randomized study will compare the effectiveness of a physician-initiated stop-smoking program with the usual care for early-stage cancer patients. Both men and women aged 19 years and older who are being seen by a physician for cancer in any of the following groups are eligible: Stage I/II bladder, colorectal, head and neck, or lung cancer; Stage I/II/III testicular cancer; Stage I/II/III/IV breast or prostate cancer; or lymphoma. Participants must have smoked one or more cigarettes within the past month.
