Seiko Instruments Ships World's First Specialty Printer that Transfers Continuous-Tone, Photo-Realistic Images onto Cotton and Cotton-Blend Fabrics; Specialty ColorPoint 820 Offers Three-in-One Output Technology to Transfer High-Quality Color Graphics onto Fabrics, Metal, Ceramics, Paper and Transparencies.


LONG BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 14, 1997--Seiko Instruments USA Inc. today introduced the world's first desktop color printer A printer that prints in color using three (CMY) or four (CMYK) colors of ink, toner or dye. Four color ribbons have been used in dot matrix printers, but these are rare today. See color laser printer and printer.  using its new exclusive ColorWear media that enables users to transfer photo-realistic color images onto cotton and cotton-blend fabrics.

The new printer is specifically designed to offer specialty printers and small business owners a cost-effective transfer printing solution for three key specialty item market segments: the advertising, novelty and specialty market; the screen and textile printing market; and the sign industry.

The Specialty ColorPoint Colorpoint

Seiko Instruments Seiko Instruments Inc. (セイコーインスツル株式会社   offers HyColor specialty media for metal and ceramics needs, and Chromatrans specialty media for a variety of fabric needs.

The Specialty ColorPoint 820 features 32MB RAM, a SCSI interface SCSI interface - SCSI adaptor , a Windows 95 print driver and color correction software for matching screen colors when printing on metal or ceramics. Printing times are as much as five times faster than previous generation models.

Exclusive ColorWear Printing Media

As part of today's announcement, Seiko Instruments is announcing its exclusive ColorWear media in a separate news announcement. ColorWear works with the Specialty ColorPoint 820's dye-sublimation mode to create continuous-tone, photographic-quality images for 100% cotton or cotton blend fabrics. ColorWear is the industry's first dye-sublimation media to use a simple one-step process.

As a result, specialty printers and small business owners can now cost-effectively accept high-quality, short-run printing business in quantities of 100 pieces or less. ColorWear is available for the Specialty ColorPoint in two page sizes: legal and A4 super with a maximum image area of 8.53 x 13.0.

Hycolor and Chromatrans media are available in up to legal sizes with a maximum image area of 8.25" x 10.69".

Pricing and Availability

The Specialty ColorPoint 820 is shipping now and will be sold through selected OEMs and VARs at a suggested retail price of $5,249.
