The feature-rich ColorPoint 820 PS, ColorPoint 830 PS and ColorPoint 835 PS deliver advanced color matching and print processing performance, networkability, and the industry's first embedded Adobe PostScript Level 2 interpreter for a dual-technology printer -- all at a class-leading price/performance value.

"The new ColorPoint series of printers are designed to offer the graphic arts and prepress markets a superior color output device to meet their everyday needs," stated Craig Lynar, director of marketing for Seiko Instruments' Color Graphics The ability to display graphic images in colors.  Group. "Dual technology printers are increasingly used in a wide array of graphic and imaging applications. Since Seiko Instruments Seiko Instruments Inc. (セイコーインスツル株式会社   introduced dual technology to the industry, we have been steadily advancing the technology while reducing the cost of ownership to our customers. ColorPoint's superior color matching accuracy is a major milestone for the desktop color printing industry. It is now possible to match the color output to printing industry color standards such as SWOP, Euroscale, DIC DIC diffuse intravascular coagulation; disseminated intravascular coagulation.

and Toyo. Seiko Instruments has developed a proprietary color matching system, MatchPoint, that is bundled with each printer model. The software offers several tools to specifically calibrate To adjust or bring into balance. Scanners, CRTs and similar peripherals may require periodic adjustment. Unlike digital devices, the electronic components within these analog devices may change from their original specification. See color calibration and tweak.  and then fine tune the printer's color output to more accurately reflect traditional industry film proofs.

MatchPoint includes tools for Printer Calibration, Dot Gain Compensation and Color Adjustment. The Printer Calibration tool is used in combination with any industry densitometer A device that calibrates the relative strength of a color using complementary filters. Contrast with colorimeter. . Seiko Instruments will offer the Light Source Colortron II Digital Color Sensor as an option. The Printer Calibration tool lets the user calibrate the ColorPoint printers so the dye sublimation sublimation, in chemistry

The Dot Gain Compensation tool, using accurate densitometer readings, simulates the effect of dot gain variations that are seen on press, further fine tuning Fine Tuning is the name of XM Satellite Radio's eclectic music channel. The program director for Fine Tuning is Ben Smith.

When necessary, this tool offers the ability to individually adjust each CMYK (Cyan Magenta Yellow blacK) The color space used for commercial printing and most color computer printers. In theory, cyan, magenta and yellow (CMY) can print all colors, but inks are not pure and black comes out muddy.  color for brightness and contrast.

The ColorPoint printer family also offers the latest in technology advancement for faster print speeds. For the ColorPoint 835 PS, Seiko Instruments has advanced the dual-technology printer engine to enable the thermal wax transfer mode to print twice as fast as dye sublimation mode.

Additionally, utilizing the latest Adobe PostScript Level 2 firmware, the ColorPoint PS printers deliver true multi-tasking, enabling the printers to receive, process and print simultaneously. This time saving feature provides printing speeds up to 25% faster than competitor's products. Multi-tasking gives users the flexibility to execute a print job and continue working while the printer is accepting and processing each file, without losing valuable production.

Three models are currently available. The ColorPoint 820 PS produces standard letter bleed (8.5 by 11-inches) size images, the ColorPoint 830 PS produces up to tabloid bleed (11 by 17-inches) size images and the ColorPoint 835 PS enables users to print a full tabloid bleed with registration, crop marks Printed lines on paper used to cut the form into its intended size.  and color bars using a paper size of 12.49 by 19.88 inches.

The new ColorPoint printers are ideal for a variety of graphic arts and prepress environments including advertising agencies, graphic design firms, photo labs, reproduction houses, print shops, and desktop service bureaus. The ColorPoint 820 PS, 830 PS and 835 PS offers these key features: -0-

Pricing and Availability

The ColorPoint 820 PS and 830 PS will be available June 30, 1996 and have a suggested retail price (SRP SRP - A data link layer protocol. ) of $7,999 and $14,999, respectively. The ColorPoint 835 PS will be available May 30, 1996 and has an SRP of $16,499. The optional Colortron has an SRP of $1,295. Seiko Instruments recently announced a leasing program which will be made available exclusively through AT&T Capital Corp. The new program will allow users to lease a Seiko Instruments ColorPoint printer for a period of one to four years.

The Cost Saving Advantage of Dual Technology

Dual-technology printers offer the unique combination of dye sublimation and thermal wax transfer color printing technologies in one printer. This dual-technology approach allows users to select the most cost-effective printing method for a variety of applications without sacrificing high print quality. For example, artwork and images in the early creative process may be printed using the printer's inexpensive vivid color thermal wax transfer mode at about a dollar per page. This allows users to make frequent changes without incurring high costs more commonly associated with dye sublimation. Over time, this will allow the printer to pay for itself in saved ink and paper costs.

The finished design or image can then be printed using the more expensive dye sublimation mode that produces continuous-tone, photo-realistic output from a palette of over 16 million colors. Therefore, it makes good economic sense to use thermal wax for early proofs and dye sublimation for final proofs. Ordinarily, two printers would be needed to perform these same functions, but Seiko Instruments combines them into one printer. Dual technology can offer a yearly savings of up to $40,000 on supplies versus comparably prices single technology dye sublimation printers A printer that produces continuous-tone images that look like photographic film. Also called a "thermal dye printer," the print cartridge contains a cellophane ribbon with panels of dye the same size as the page to be printed. .
