Steganos has launched a new generation of its encryption software for business, Steganos Safe Professional 2007. This release introduces protection for Outlook data and quadruples the maximum size of each encrypted safe to 256GB. A million laptops and PDAs are stolen worldwide each year, not to mention those that are left behind in train stations, planes or taxis.

While the hardware loss is considerable, greater damage can be done by the leaking of company information into the public domain. Confidence in a business can be rocked if customer data is leaked, and companies can lose their competitive edge if their rivals have access to their customer lists, marketing plans and research. A survey by Steganos has found that as many as 41% of employees keep company data on easily lost USB keys and 83% of them use no encryption. Steganos Safe Professional 2007 provides a suite of tools for encrypting data, supported by the administrative features required to deploy and manage software in a business environment. By encrypting data, businesses can be confident that whatever happens to their hardware and removeable storage devices, their data is secure.

Steganos Safe Professional 2007 enables users to create any number of secure virtual drives, in which data is safely stored and encrypted. Each drive can now hold up to 256GB, so that large volumes of business data can be encrypted without delay. The drives can be accessed by multiple teams.

While only one user can log in to write to the drive at a time, all authorised users can have read access to encrypted data. New in this release: each safe has its own keyboard shortcut enabling it to be quickly opened from any application. This release introduces protection for data stored in Microsoft Outlook, including sensitive emails, important customer and business partner contact details, calendar entries and task lists. The whole PST file can now be locked safely in an Outlook Safe. Users can only start Outlook and access its data by providing the correct password. Encrypted archives can be stored on CDs, DVDs, storage cards, USB keys and DVD- DL media. These mobile safes can be opened without additional software on any PC, provided that administrator rights are available to enable the one-time installation of the decryption program. On rewritable media such as USB keys, data can also be added from other PCs. To avoid employees having to remember complicated passwords, Steganos Safe Professional 2007 makes it possible to use portable storage devices to store the decryption key. Secure drives can then be opened by connecting a USB stick, PDA, storage card, digital camera or ActiveSync-compatible mobile phone.

Using a bluetooth device, the safe is automatically encrypted when the user moves away from the PC. Alternatively, users can enter passwords manually. To provide an enhanced level of security, administrators can require users to have a physical key (such as a USB key) to unlock data.
