Security Dynamics to Incorporate VeriSign Certificate Authority Technology Into Enterprise Security Services.
Will Help Companies Ensure Secure Access to Information
Throughout the Enterprise
Security Dynamics Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:SDTI), the leading provider of security solutions for remote access to enterprise networks, today announced that it intends to incorporate VeriSign Inc.'s Certificate Authority (CA) technology into its Enterprise Security Services (ESS) strategy. Announced in February, ESS is being designed to give companies enterprise-wide security solutions that help them conduct business securely, protect their corporate information assets, and facilitate electronic commerce. As a core element of ESS, VeriSign's CA technology will allow companies to create and manage the digital certificates that will enable new security applications such as secure messaging, secure access to applications, and business-to-business electronic commerce.
The addition of the VeriSign CA technology is another step in a series of moves by Security Dynamics to introduce products and form partnerships that will enable delivery of its ESS framework. In addition to certificate management, ESS will provide strong authentication using tokens and smartcards, as well as other encryption-based security services, such as key management, privilege management and enterprise-wide security administration. These services will help companies securely exploit the business opportunities presented by intranets, extranets and electronic commerce.
"We've chosen to partner with VeriSign, the industry leader in certificate technology," said Chuck Stuckey, president, chairman and CEO of Security Dynamics. "We understand the security challenges companies are facing today. With the combination of our strong authentication and encryption services, and VeriSign's industry-leading CA technology, we will provide customers with world-class security solutions that can be deployed with confidence."
"Security Dynamics has the proven technology, track record and premier customer base to deliver on the promise of enterprise-wide security solutions," said Stratton Sclavos, president and CEO of VeriSign. "As the market leader for digital authentication services, we view Security Dynamics' ESS strategy as a vital channel for delivering our award-winning technology to corporate customers."
A certificate authority acts as a trusted third party that issues digital certificates to individuals and organizations. These certificates can play several roles in enterprise security applications. They enable secure authentication by binding an RSA public key to an individual. They can help ensure that secure messages arrive unaltered. They support digital signatures, or non- repudiation, by acting as an electronic notary public. They can also be a means of issuing privileges to individuals to access selected networks and databases, creating the basis for a single sign-on solution.
With its ESS strategy, Security Dynamics intends to continue its support of industry standards - including X.509 certificates and LDAP-enabled directory services - that ensure interoperability with other certificate-based solutions. "VeriSign's leadership in certificate standards has garnered them widespread industry adoption and acceptance," said Dave Power, senior vice president of marketing and corporate development at Security Dynamics. "Our relationship with VeriSign will help us create an open platform that ensures interoperability with other security technology partners."
