THE 25 largest securities brokerages in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County reported 4,481 licensed local brokers, up 620 brokers, or 16 percent, from the previous year. The increase comes even as the numbers of brokers are declining nationally.

, No. 3 this year, made the biggest jump on the year's fist. The San Francisco-based bank reported 468 brokers locally, an increase of 193 brokers, or 70.2 percent, over the previous year. Overall, 17 firms on this year's list increased the size of their local brokerage staff. That includes Western International Securities Inc., No. 11 this year, which jumped two spots after reporting 97 brokers, 22 more than the previous year for a 29.3 percent increase.

U.S. holding company formed in 1998 from the merger of Citicorp (itself a holding company incorporated in 1967) and Travelers Group, Inc. The $70 billion merger included one of the largest U.S. investment banks, Salomon Smith Barney Inc.
