SecureWave Sanctuary Enables Schools to Safely Incorporate Technology into the Learning Process.

Endpoint Security Software Protects Technology Investments and Enhances Student Computing computing - computer  Experiences at Colleges, Universities and K-12 School Districts around the World

HERNDON, Va. -- SecureWave, a worldwide leader in endpoint security software, today announced that it is seeing increased demand for its Sanctuary security software at colleges, universities and K-12 school districts around the world. Sanctuary is the industry's only solution that enables organizations to create a whitelist of both applications and removable storage media that are allowed to run on PCs, laptops and servers. All forms of malware (MALicious softWARE) Software designed to destroy, aggravate and otherwise make life unhappy. See crimeware, virus, worm, logic bomb, macro virus and Trojan. , unwanted software and unauthorized devices are denied access by default, enabling educators to securely incorporate technology into their curriculums while protecting students' well-being and schools' technology investments.

"When it comes to student computing, administrators are generally conservative, completely locking down workstations and limiting access to various programs and applications. At Trussville, we consider this approach to be impractical im·prac·ti·cal

because we want both teachers and students to benefit from the tremendous advances that have been made in information technology," said Shawn Nutting, director of technology at Trussville City Schools Image=

The Trussville City School District is the school system of Trussville, Alabama. The school system opened in 2005 after separating from the Jefferson County School System. Schools belonging to the system include:
  • Hewitt-Trussville High School, opened in 1984.

. "SecureWave's Sanctuary allows us to take advantage of new technologies while preventing any viruses or unwanted software from harming our systems. We are able to enhance our students' classroom experiences by securely incorporating a digital curriculum. In addition, Sanctuary will reduce our IT support work load by about 50 percent, enabling my staff to focus on other technologies more closely connected to the learning process."

Schools across the globe--including Trussville City Schools, the University of Texas-San Antonio and Bishop's Stortford College Bishop's Stortford College is a public school, with a 130-acre campus located on the edge of Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, England. It is an independent, co-educational, day and boarding school for children aged 4 to 18 years.  (Hertfordshire, England)--rely on Sanctuary to proactively protect PCs, laptops and servers by allowing administrators to explicitly define authorized au·thor·ize

applications and removable storage media. Sanctuary's whitelist approach addresses both present and future threats, adding a layer of security that is unavailable in anti-virus and other traditional blacklisting solutions. Teachers and other faculty can work with the IT staff to create a list of allowed programs and media to support the learning process.

"Providing access to university PCs is necessary to help students prepare for success in today's technology-driven world. However, each workstation must represent a safe environment that protects both the student and the university's computer," said Don Stofko, a computer lab manager at the University of Texas-San Antonio. "SecureWave's Sanctuary is the perfect solution because it enables the use of any technology that promotes learning while preventing unwanted malicious codes, programs or unauthorized removable storage media from working on our PCs. Sanctuary also helps us comply with a state law that requires universities to document who installed every piece of software that resides on university computers. Because the IT staff has to approve all applications and Sanctuary logs all modifications to the whitelist, I can easily provide this information."

From 2005 to 2006, the number of schools using SecureWave's Sanctuary increased by 163 percent worldwide and the number of licenses grew by 500 percent. As a result, SecureWave's revenue within the education industry increased nearly 200 percent. Sanctuary has allowed many of these schools, including Trussville City Schools, to expand their technology programs. Trussville plans to issue more than 800 laptops to students in the sixth grade and higher, a program made possible because Sanctuary eliminates the possibility of any malware or unauthorized applications from compromising the school district's machines. Other schools, including Bishop's Stortford College, are able to allow students to use removable storage media without fear that they will introduce malware or use the devices to download copyrighted materials.

"Sanctuary is an ideal solution for any university or K-12 school district looking to safely incorporate technology into their curriculums without increasing their support needs. It enables administrators rather than inhibiting them by keeping the IT staff focused on increasing productivity instead of constantly reacting to problems," said Bob Johnson Bob Johnson may refer to:

"Schools across the globe are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits that technology provides for students and teachers, and IT administrators continue to turn to Sanctuary to promote safe computing. We look forward to continued growth in the education market as more and more schools adopt innovative technology programs that require sound policy enforcement solutions."
