Remember the Secure Digital Music Initiative Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI) was a forum formed in late 1998, comprised of more than 200 IT, consumer electronics, security technology, ISP and recording industry companies, ostensibly with the purpose of developing technology specifications that protected the , the outfit that came out with what was supposed to be the consummate encryption The reversible transformation of data from the original (the plaintext) to a difficult-to-interpret format (the ciphertext) as a mechanism for protecting its confidentiality, integrity and sometimes its authenticity. Encryption uses an encryption algorithm and one or more encryption keys.  scheme to protect copyrighted material on the Web?

SDMI (Secure Digital Music Initiative) A set of rules for securely distributing digital music over the Internet. Announced in February 1999, it is backed by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and Sony, Warner, BMG, EMI and Universal, the top five  last month issued a public challenge to hackers, offering them $10,000 if they, could break the code.

Hackers, of course, love a challenge. The organization has received more than 400 claims of success, and it's evaluating the merit of each before paying off.

Among the more legitimate claimants is a team of researchers from Princeton University Princeton University, at Princeton, N.J.; coeducational; chartered 1746, opened 1747, rechartered 1748, called the College of New Jersey until 1896. Schools and Research Facilities
, Rice University and Xerox Corp.

The team is promising to post on their Web site (www.cs.princeton.edu/sip/sdmi/) next month a technical report explaining how it achieved the feat.

Said SDMI Executive Director Leonardo Chiariglione Leonardo Chiariglione is an italian engineer, born in Almese (in the province of Turin, Piedmont). He is mostly known for his work in the areas of telecommunications and digital media.  about the challenge: "This test will provide us with important feedback on actual conditions, and will tap the expertise of people from around the globe."
