Secure Care Products developed the first electronic monitoring system for wandering residents. In 1979, Andrew Fennelly established the company in Portland, Maine, calling it Secure Care Systems. Since then, technological advances have enabled the evolving company to continue creating more sophisticated systems for use in the longterm care industry.

The motivation for Fennelly's development of the first electronic resident monitoring system was to accommodate the wanderers in his own long-term care facility, even before the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987 mandated against using chemical or physical restraints. The cost for the first system was about $5,000 for a single door with nurse station and no locks, or $5,280 for a double door with nurse station and no locks.

Secure Care Systems was acquired by its current ownership in 1988 and renamed Secure Care Products. At that time the company also relocated to Concord, New Hampshire. The current owners have been providing healthcare services since 1946. Their concept of restraint-free supervision for wandering residents became a reality with the introduction of a new monitoring system. Unlike the initial hard-wired system, the new one stood alone and could be plugged into an outlet. It was easier to install and less costly.

As technology rapidly evolves, Secure Care continues to update its systems. The invention of microcomputer chips has dramatically affected Secure Care. Fennelly's first resident monitoring system would simply set off an alarm if a resident exited the building. Microcomputer chips opened the door for the development of software and exit panels, which allow for more flexible systems. Electronic monitoring systems could now combine wandering functions with security functions for an integrated package.

One such integrated wandering system, the Resident ID, has been available for five years and is far more advanced than its predecessors. When the exit is approached by a monitored resident, the system will identify the resident by his or her name, lock the door and report the attempted exit to the nurse console. The nurse console then displays the resident's name, room number and the exit location.

Today, Secure Care Products designs and manufactures a complete line of radio-frequency-based electronic security systems to assist long-term care facilities in the following areas: access and exit control, wandering resident management and chair/bed exit. The company has a unique transmitter program, which provides complete tracking of each transmitter for each facility.

Secure Care has had thousands of successful installations in healthcare facilities worldwide. Its distribution network covers the fifty states, nine Canadian provinces and several European countries.
