Second habitat conference recommended for 1997.

In other action, the Commission noted progress made in implementing the Global Strategy for Shelter to the Year 2000, and recognized the Centre's central role in implementing the Strategy and in the exchange of information on human settlements experiences.

International donors were asked to step up their contribution and assistance, in particular to Habitat, to assist the Strategy's implementation.

The Commission's fourteenth session is set to be held in Nairobi in 1993.

In concluding remarks, Commission Executive Director Arcot Ramachandran said the purpose of the Strategy was to put in place by the year 2000 housing solutions for all the disadvantaged of the world. Observing it was only eight and a half years away, he asked: "Can anybody point to evidence of the great upsurge of energy and initiative which we all know it would take to meet this challenge? On the contrary, we can all see that the shelter situation is in fact worsening wors·en
