Second annual Small Business Awards: and the nominees are....


Armed with the theme "Entrepreneurial Strategies for the 21st Century," the second annual BLACK ENTERPRISE/NationsBank Entrepreneurs Conference is poised to once again be one of the biggest events of the year for black business owners. Close to 1,000 entrepreneurs and other business people are expected to attend this year's event, which will be held May 7-11 at Disney's Yacht & Beach Club Resorts in Lake Buena Vista, Florida Lake Buena Vista is a city in Orange County, Florida, United States. It is mostly known for being home to the Walt Disney World Resort. The population was 16 at the 2000 census. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 15. . The event will boast dynamic sessions and workshops headed by the nation's top experts on networking, securing capital, money management, globalization globalization

Here's a look at this year's nominees.

Emerging Company of the Year: This award recognizes businesses that are poised for future growth because they've carved out a well-hidden niche for themselves and have adopted creative marketing techniques.

* Best Domestic Services Agency Inc.: Operating with a database of more than 5,000 domestic help professionals, Best Domestic provides child care service for such clients as Tommy Hilfiger Thomas Jacob Hilfiger (born March 24, 1951 in Elmira, New York) is a world-famous American fashion designer and creator of the eponymous "Tommy Hilfiger" and "Tommy" brands. * Cultural Exchange Entertainment Corp./Cultural Toys: Jacob Miles wanted to create toys that were safe, educational and self-reflective, thus the nation's first African American-owned full-line toy company was created in 1993. * Michele Foods Inc.: Using a family recipe, Michele Hoskins has built a $5.5 million company that manufactures and markets premium syrups. Formed in 1984, the firm distributes syrups to about 6,000 retail stores, supermarkets and restaurants nationwide including Denny's, Walmart and Food Lion Food Lion LLC is an American grocery store company headquartered in Salisbury, North Carolina that operates approximately 1,300 supermarkets in 11 Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states under the Food Lion, Harveys, Bloom, Bottom Dollar, and Reid's nameplates. .

Business Innovator of the Year: This award honors companies that have successfully set trends and broken new ground in a particular industry.

* Cabana Car Wash: Cabana Car Wash is an innovative full-service car wash that offers more than just a hot wax and sealer sealer,

* Vendemmia Inc.: Four years ago, Todd Alexander, now 29, turned a hobby and passion for wine into a $ 1.2 million wine import and distribution company. Vendemmia (which means "harvest" in Italian) imports from such places as California, France and Italy, and sells to the finest restaurants, hotels and wine stores in Atlanta.

Rising Star Award: This award recognizes individuals, ages 21-35, who exemplify outstanding skills, professionalism and perseverance and have established themselves as future business leaders.

* A1 Turbo Exchange: Tony Haywood, 33, has been building his Santa Monica business over the last 10 years. A performance automobile shop specializing in building and rebuilding turbochargers and superchargers for cars and trucks, A1 maintains national and international clients. The company services about 100 cars per month and had sales of $400,000 last year.

* Bardwell Industries: A $1.4 million computer hardware manufacturer, Bardwell Industries was established in 1986. Founder Kenneth Bardwell, 34, uses his extensive background in mechanical, automotive and computer design engineering to develop sophisticated high-tech computer components for major clients, including Chyrsler.

* Bulldog Entertainment: Through this two-year-old entertainment company, Jimmy "Mac" McNeal, 24, and Joel Sylvain, 25, handle the careers of up-and-coming R&B artists, hip-hop and rap artists. With $750,000 in revenues in 1996, the New York New York, state, United States

* Classy Productions: Classy Productions, a Washington, D.C.-based catering and event planning business, is owned and operated by 17-year-old Maleka Lenzy. The company, which debuted in 1996, has earned sales of nearly $2,000 catering affairs for the Washington, D.C., Chamber of Commerce, the city's Board of Trade and other professional organizations.

* Little Miss Muffin: While most 10-year-olds are out playing in the park, Jessica Malone is baking and delivering muffins. As the owner of Little Miss Muffin, Jessica makes more than 40 different kinds of muffins for family, friends and businesses in her hometown of Lorain, Ohio. Her company made sales of $900 last year.

* Umoja Children Inc.: Owned by black youths ages 9-17, Umoja is a Baltimore-based greeting card company that specializes in creating Christmas and Kwanzaa cards. Working in virtually every area of the business, from writing card inscriptions to checking inventory to handling the books, these youths have built a business that saw $160,000 in sales in 1996. The cards are distributed in about 20 cities.
