Second Sunday of Easter: April 23, 2006.

Acts 4:32-35

Psalm 133

1 John 1:1-2:2

John 20:19-31

Cupped Ear/Psalm Sounds

Listen to this psalm against the background noise of family gatherings, holidays, reunions, and worship.

Hear the sounds of affection as verse 1 proclaims the joy of being with kindred in unity. The word kindred refers to men and women who are in kin relationship to one another. They share a common history, tribe, ancestor, or name. Since all family gatherings are not necessarily harmonious, it is good and pleasant when this occurs.

Verses 2 and 3 repeat the Hebrew verb "to go down" in three places: running down Aaron's beard Aar·on's beard

with the oil of Aaron on their heads. It glistened on their beards and their beautiful vestments. Priests presided over sacrifice and worship. This psalm reflects the festive sense of meal and worship.

Mount Hermon Mount Hermon (; Arabic: جبل الشيخ, Jabal el-Shaiykh, Djabl a-Shekh, Hebrew:  was famous for its abundant dew. It was an important source of water in the dry hot summers. There was so much dew that it "ran down" from the mountain in refreshing and life-giving excess.

Listen to the sound of God's blessings "running down" from the gracious Lord who gives life its goodness in community and praise.

Open Mouth/Psalm Speech

When, as preachers, we talk about family, we need to be very careful and very precise. The model of a traditional family with two parents and children is no longer the norm. Instead, there are single-parent families, divorced families, weekend children, blended families, and unmarried families.

Preachers know that conflict and brokenness exist in their own parish families. So when this psalm celebrates God's gift of unity in the family, we can all say "Amen." It is a wonderful blessing from God to have peace and unity in our personal families and in our church families. Maybe a sermon on this gift from God might strengthen, encourage, challenge, or raise some thankfulness in the new and different world of twenty-first-century families. DRB DRB Design Review Board
