Seattle Lab and DataFocus Sign OEM Agreement for Telnet Server; DataFocus' NuTCRACKER Product to Include Seattle Lab's SLnet Telnet Server.

FAIRFAX, Va., and SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 26, 1998-- DataFocus has signed an agreement with Seattle Lab to include SLnet as their Telnet server, enhancing the functionality of the award-winning NuTCRACKER Product Family, which migrates and runs enterprise-critical UNIX UNIX

Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics).
applications on Windows and helps UNIX and Windows interoperate.

SLnet is currently available with NuTCRACKER version 4.1, which began shipping today. NuTCRACKER 4.1 bundles a single-connection telnet server to help you interoperate between UNIX and Windows. 4.1 offers single- and unlimited connection telnet servers at aggressive pricing, should you need to redistribute a telnet server with your application.

"SLnet is a valuable component of the UNIX to NT migration process, since so many applications depend on Telnet for their communications links," said L.A. Heberlein, president of Seattle Lab. "And NuTCRACKER gives SLnet a boost into additional enterprise locations which can certainly use the Telnet server."

The agreement between DataFocus and Seattle Lab allows NuTCRACKER to operate applications on Windows that normally run on UNIX, and other character-based operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. , including POSIX (Portable Operating System Interface for UNIX) An IEEE 1003.1 standard that defines the language interface between application programs and the Unix operating system. , Solaris, HP-UX HP's version of Unix that runs on its 9000 family. It is based on SVID and incorporates features from BSD Unix along with several HP innovations.

It is an enhanced version of Unix System V Release 4. IRIX integrates the X Window system with OpenGL, creating the first real time 3D X environment.  and such legacy UNIX flavors as SunOS.

"With the growing demand for UNIX capabilities on Windows, the inclusion of a Telnet Server is very important to our customers," said Pat Higbie, Chairman and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of DataFocus. "SLnet is designed for the most demanding commercial and industrial applications and we are pleased to be offering it as a part of our NuTCRACKER product."

NuTCRACKER's Win32 Plug-in design gives access not only to UNIX tools and APIs, but also to the complete Win32 API, as well as to all third-party APIs supported on the Win32 architecture. This design permits tighter software integration and more complete UNIX software compatibility than is possible with solutions that do not run in the Win32 subsystem.

"We're excited about adding SLnet's capabilities to the NuTCRACKER interoperability arsenal," said Seattle Lab's CEO Robert Whelan. "DataFocus recognized that SLnet has strong features which complement and enhance the strengths of NuTCRACKER."

SLnet is Seattle Lab's award-winning Telnet server for Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. . It includes secure Telnet Logon, to ensure passwords and critical commands are protected by encrypting every Telnet message. Sniffers can no longer see critical information when users log on. SLnet also comes with a character-based registry editor which works directly from the command line. SLnet turns Windows into a true multi-user system. It is completely integrated with NT's strong security system.

SLnet allows users to drop straight into custom applications or allow access to NT's Common Command Shell, and allows users to work invisibly on the NT server without interfering with an NT console user. It allows unlimited concurrent connections for any device running terminal emulation Using software in a desktop machine to make it perform like a hardware terminal. The emulated terminal is typically in the VT100-500 family, designed originally by Digital Equipment. , including hand-held RF systems.

NuTCRACKER offers the most complete set of APIs in the market (approximately 2500 APIs), including the most commonly used APIs from UNIX 98, POSIX, 4.4BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution) The software distribution facility of the Computer Systems Research Group (CSRG) of the University of California at Berkeley. , ANSI C (language, standard) ANSI C - (American National Standards Institute C) A revision of C, adding function prototypes, structure passing, structure assignment and standardised library functions. , OpenGL, Motif, X11R6, and others. NuTCRACKER applications run natively in the Win32 subsystem, just like other Windows applications, and can take advantage of all Windows features, including COM (1) (Computer Output Microfilm) Creating microfilm or microfiche from the computer. A COM machine receives print-image output from the computer either online or via tape or disk and creates a film image of each page. , the registry, and Windows Help Microsoft WinHelp is a proprietary format for online help files that can be displayed by the Microsoft Help browser winhelp.exe or winhlp32.exe. The file format is based on Rich Text Format (RTF). It remained a popular Help platform from Windows 3. .

Telnet is used to log onto another computer on the Internet. It operates a wide range of functions, including data transfer, sending command sequences to the host or remote computer, and utilizing disks, memory, services, and peripherals attached to the host computer.
