By linking potent, cytotoxic drug cytotoxic drug Oncology An anticancer drug which acts by killing or preventing the cell division Adverse effects Damage to noncancerous tissues or organs with a high proportion of actively dividing cells–eg, BM, hair follicles, GI tract, thereby limiting the  payloads to monoclonal antibodies This is a list of monoclonal antibodies, antibodies which are clones of a single parent cell. When used as medications, the generic names end in -mab (see "Nomenclature of monoclonal antibodies"). , ADCs can increase the therapeutic potential of antibodies that have inherent cell targeting ability.

"This patent provides additional intellectual property protection for several novel drugs we utilize in our second-generation ADC technology, and is an important addition to our patent portfolio," stated Eric L. Dobmeier, Senior Vice President, Corporate Development and General Counsel of Seattle Genetics. "We employ our ADC technology to empower antibody-based products in our own pipeline, including SGN-35 and SGN-75, as well as partner this technology with leading biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies including Genentech, Bayer, CuraGen and, most recently, MedImmune."

Seattle Genetics' second-generation ADC technology utilizes the targeting ability of monoclonal antibodies to deliver potent, cell-killing payloads to specific cells. This ADC technology employs synthetic, highly potent drugs, such as MMAE, that can be attached to antibodies through proprietary linker systems. The linkers are designed to be stable in the bloodstream but to release the drug payload (1) Refers to the "actual data" in a packet or file minus all headers attached for transport and minus all descriptive meta-data. In a network packet, headers are appended to the payload for transport and then discarded at their destination.  under specific conditions once inside target cells, potentially sparing non-target cells many of the toxic effects of traditional chemotherapy.

About Seattle Genetics
