Seagram Forges Alliance With Foster's in Australia and New Zealand.


NEW YORK/MELBOURNE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--October 31/November 1, 1999--

The Seagram Spirits And Wine Group has announced today the formation of a strategic alliance between The Seagram Company Ltd. and Carlton & United Breweries (CUB), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Foster's Brewing Group. This landmark agreement is designed to build scale and provide further growth opportunities for both parties in Australia and New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia. The capital is Wellington; the largest city and leading port is Auckland. .

Under the terms of this agreement, CUB, through its acquisition of Seagram Australia Pty. Limited and certain Seagram assets in New Zealand, has purchased Seagram's strong line-up of local spirits brands in Australia and New Zealand, including production, inventory and distribution. Through the agreement, CUB will also bottle and distribute in Australia and New Zealand select international Seagram brands - Captain Morgan Captain Morgan is a brand of rum produced by Diageo. It is named after the 17th-century Caribbean privateer from Wales, Sir Henry Morgan. Captain Morgan's slogan is "Got a little Captain in You?" History  Rum, Seagram's Extra Dry Gin, and 100 Pipers Scotch Whisky - as well as Chatelle Brandy, which is jointly owned by Seagram and Camus SA. Additionally, CUB will distribute in these markets Seagram's imported international brands including Chivas Regal Chivas Regal

 and Royal Salute The Royal Salute is one of the two salutes given by the Guard of Honour, second being the general salute. The name "Royal Salute" means it is the honorary salute given by the Guard to the reigning Monarch.  Scotch Whiskies, Martell Cognac, and Sandeman Ports, as well as ABSOLUT VODKA for V&S Vin & Sprit AB.

The new business will trade as The Continental Spirits Company Pty Ltd PTY LTD Propriety Limited (company structure in Australia)  within the CUB umbrella, offering an unrivalled portfolio of category leaders in the marketplace.

The agreement is valued at A$87 million (US$56m). Further terms were not disclosed.
