) today announced the latest addition to its award-winning Medalist product line of 3.5-inch hard disc drives. At the popular 2.1-Gbyte capacity point, Seagate's new Fast ATA-2 interface Medalist 2132 (ST32132A) provides desktop computer users with a combination of high capacity, strong performance, and exceptional value. The introduction of the Medalist 2132 also marks the debut of an innovative device that enhances reliability and simplifies drive installation. This device, called SeaShield, is included at no extra cost to the customer.

"Our customers consistently place reliability as one of the most important factors in choosing a hard disc drive," said Phil Detwiler, senior vice president of Sales and Marketing at Seagate. "With SeaShield, Seagate is building upon its strong commitment to develop practical, effective solutions that fulfill the needs of its customers."

About SeaShield

Developed and manufactured by Seagate, SeaShield is designed to enhance reliability in the Medalist 2132 by protecting the printed circuit board (PCB PCB: see polychlorinated biphenyl.

SeaShield also serves to protect the PCB against knocks and bumps that can occur during handling of the drive, giving users greater flexibility and freedom of movement during the installation process.

In addition to enhancing reliability, SeaShield also makes the task of installing a Medalist 2132 or upgrading to a Medalist 2132 drive easier than ever before. Summarized installation instructions are now conveniently printed directly on the SeaShield label, providing a practical alternative to installation guides that are often lost or misplaced mis·place

Medalist 2132: Designed for Today's Desktop User

The Medalist 2132 is specifically designed to meet the increasing performance and value demands of the desktop computer market. Utilizing Seagate's advanced thin film head technology and PRML (Partial Response Maximum Likelihood) A technique used to differentiate a valid signal from noise by measuring the rate of change at various intervals of the rising waveform.  read channel, this drive offers an affordable storage solution with the capacity and performance desktop users require. Featuring 2.1 Gbytes of capacity in a one-inch high form factor, the Medalist 2132 spins at a robust 4,500-rpm and performs average seeks at a rate of 12.5 ms, enabling users to fully enjoy data-intensive applications like multimedia, full-screen, full-motion video Video transmission that changes the image 30 frames per second (30 fps). Motion pictures are run at 24 fps, which is the minimum frequency required to eliminate the perception of moving frames and make the images appear visually fluid to the eye.  playback, and manipulation of high-resolution files on the internet.

"Realizing the benefits brought about by its merger with Conner, Seagate is bringing new-found strength in vertical integration and an improved focus on design efficiencies and cost savings to the user," said Detwiler. "The new Medalist 2132 marks the evolution of a rapidly-changing disc drive market, and Seagate's ability to evolve with it."
