Seagate Software, Storage Management Group Enhances its BackOffice Strategy with New Products; Company Offers Cost-Effective, Integrated Data Protection Solutions Based on Microsoft Windows NT and Microsoft Exchange Server.


LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 2, 1996--Seagate Software, Storage Management Group (SMG SMG - Screen Management Guidelines. It is part of the Microsoft Servers line of server products and is widely used by enterprises using Microsoft infrastructure solutions. : a backup module for Microsoft Exchange Server and a backup agent for Microsoft Exchange Server. The products provide automated client/server functionality for the integration of backup for Microsoft Exchange Server into existing network backup routines. As a result, customers are afforded a cost-effective and comprehensive solution for total network backup.

The company's new module for Microsoft Exchange Server is designed for use with Seagate Backup Exec Backup Exec is backup software for Microsoft Windows environments currently developed by Symantec. Backup Exec has a long history of being sold from one company to another.  for Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). The new agent for Microsoft Exchange Server is designed for use with Seagate Backup Director and Seagate Storage Manager products. Backup Director offers highly automated network backup and Storage Manager provides automated backup, archiving and integrated HSM (1) (Hierarchical Storage Management) The automatic movement of files from hard disk to slower, less-expensive storage media. The typical hierarchy is from magnetic disk to optical disc to tape.  solutions for growing networks.

Rather than incurring the expense of performing and maintaining separate backup procedures, network managers can utilize the new products to schedule backups for Microsoft Exchange Server to occur at the same time as their regular network backups. Managers also can reduce their media costs and administration overhead because the products integrated functionality allows Microsoft Windows See Windows.

To further support that strategy, key features have been incorporated into Seagate Softwares products for Microsoft Exchange Server, including:

On-line support -- enables active Microsoft Exchange servers to be protected without taking them off-line, allowing mission critical servers to remain open 24 hours and be backed up while in use.

Autoloader support -- automates unattended backups by providing support for an extensive list of autoloaders, including support for multi-drive devices.

Error notification -- utilizes SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  and e-mail notification to alert administrators of errors with Microsoft Exchange backups.

In addition, Seagate Software developed the backup utility included with Microsoft Exchange Server. Seagate Software also supplies the backup utility included in Windows NT, providing years of Windows NT data protection experience for customers. The new products for Microsoft Exchange Server add features that provide users with full automation and integration of Microsoft Exchange backups.
