Sea story: at age 92, Jack Lawrence, out lyricist of "Beyond the Sea," talks about his new autobiography--and about having Kevin Spacey sing his words.Could the lyrics of the love song "Beyond the Sea, made famous by the late Bobby Darin Bobby Darin (born Walden Robert "Bobby" Cassotto, May 14 1936 – December 20, 1973) was one of the most popular American big band performers and rock and roll teen idols of the late 1950s. , have been written with two men in mind? "It could have been," says Jack Lawrence, the openly gay 92-year-old songwriter who wrote the lyrics about a sailor at sea longing for his lover waiting at home. "But," Lawrence continues, "I wouldn't be telling the truth if I said that it ['Beyond the Sea'] was in terms of two men. I think I just wanted to tell a romantic story." Lawrence adds that he never stressed gender when writing a lyric. "Unless you're writing like Noel Coward Noun 1. Lawrence's new memoir, They All Sang My Songs: The Times of My Life (Barricade Books, $27.95), details his remarkable life and a songwriting career that began in 1932. He wrote the lyrics for such classics as "Tenderly," the romantic Rosemary Clooney hit, and the faintly campy "If I Didn't Care" (for which he wrote the music as well), recorded by the Ink Spots--plus a host of other songs performed by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald Noun 1. But "Beyond the Sea" remains one of the most enduring songs of Lawrence's vast catalog. It's been included on the soundtracks of films as diverse as Finding Nemo, Apollo 13, and Diner diner, restaurant resembling the railroad dining car that is its source. "I never did a direct translation, because that was not creative," says Lawrence. So he decided to make it into a ballad that told a story. Of course, the version we all remember is considerably more upbeat. "Bobby Darin was the one who really changed [the tempo]," says Lawrence. "He turned that song into a smash hit." Was Lawrence reluctant to see his ballad recorded as a swinging big-band number? "I loved it," he says. "I had given it to Bobby. I didn't suggest anything about what he should do with it. He called me and said, 'I hear it with a beat,' and I said, 'Do it.'" And so the heat goes on. As has been widely reported, the movie is a dream come true for Spacey, a longtime fan who persevered for years to get a movie made about Darin's life. In addition to starring, the Academy Award-winning actor is also directing and producing the film--and doing his own singing. Just as he did years ago with Darin, Lawrence, who has never heard Spacey sing, is happy to turn his creation over to yet another great artist. "It's nice to know I sparked the title of a picture. I hope it does well," he says. And by the way, when pressed, Lawrence reveals the secret to his longevity: "I sleep in Fraction," he laughs.
