The Galapagos Marine Reserve was created in 1998, by the Special Law for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of the Galapagos Province.  Service and the Ecuadorian Navy, and comes at a crucial juncture in the history of efforts to preserve the unique natural heritage of the Galapagos.

The fishermen demanded the lobster fishing quota be extended beyond the limits set on earlier this year. Hundreds of new fishermen had flocked to the islands to participate in the high-profit fishing.

Ecuadorian President Gustavo Noboa has issued a statement affirming "the country's commitment to guarantee the conservation of the extraordinary biodiversity and ecosystems of the archipelago.

Sea Shepherd's volunteer delivery crew piloted the vessel from its dry dock facilities in Seattle on November 25, and will fuel and take on supplies in Los Angeles. On board are donated computers, cameras, and video and communications equipment to replace units lost by the Galapagos National Park Service in the recent violence.

The Sea Shepherd patrol vessel, Sirenian sirenian (sīrē`nēən) or sea cow, name for a large aquatic mammal of the order Sirenia.
