Sherwood, president of Sea Containers, said that the Fincantieri order was the culmination of more than two years effort to design and build a new series of high speed vessels with double the car-carrying capacity of the first generation ships built for the company by the Incat Tasmania yard. The new series will be called "SuperSeaCats" to reflect the larger capacity compared with the first generation "SeaCats." Sherwood said the SuperSeaCat program had been delayed because of an attempt to build a catamaran catamaran (kăt'əmərăn`), watercraft made up of two connected hulls or a single hull with two parallel keels. Originally used by the natives of Polynesia, the catamaran design was adopted by Western boat builders in the 19th cent. design at the Austal yard in Western Australia. The trial speed of this vessel was well under contract requirements so the ship had to be rejected. He indicated that in the opinion of the company's in-house naval architects, Hart, Fenton & Co., the monohull will outperform a catamaran above a certain size and is much less costly to build. He also said it had proven very difficult to work with Australian yards due in part to their long distance from home leading to misunderstandings and non-observance of contract requirements. Sherwood said that Fincantieri's technical team and resources were so great that the sort of problems encountered with the Australian yards should be avoided. Sherwood said that present plans were to employ the six newbuildings in the Irish Sea, English Channel and Scandinavia. He indicated that the five first generation SeaCats would likely be employed in Argentina, Venezuela, the Irish Sea and Italy. The smaller ships are being used to establish routes which will be taken over by the larger ones later on. None of the newbuildings will carry freight or buses. He indicated that in Sea Containers' opinion freight would move in dedicated ro-ro vessels because the hauliers will not pay a premium for high speed transport. The SuperSeaCat's superstructure design is by Sergio Pininfarina and the interiors will be by Vittorio Garroni Carbonara car·bo·na·ra n. The ships will not have bow doors and will have a U-turn system on the car decks to speed disembarkation. Vehicle parking will be on two decks. The passengers will be accommodated on two levels, with a "club class" on the upper deck and "standard class" on the lower deck. There will be a panorama window bar and cafeteria at the stern of the vessel and a large duty-free shop. There will be external sheltered deck seating and an internal bridge observation area.
