, the doctors gave us a miracle. They cured her vision and arthritis problem. But she had to have treatment for life. We only planned to stay for one year. So I looked around for a business to start. I tried to do something with sculpting, which I did before, but just for fun. We made our permanent home here and we've been citizens for 20 years. My daughter is still in a wheelchair and is a practicing psychologist.

"I opened the business in 1980. We have a 6,000-square-foot warehouse with an office and a showroom. We have five employees and hire people for projects. If we have small jobs, we do five or six a day, but larger projects can take up to two months with everyone in the shop working on it.

"Our specialty is waterjet cutting. The machine shoots water through a nozzle. It cuts through five inches of steel or titanium, glass, marble, any material. We also use it for inlays and etching.

"In 1995 we wanted to buy a waterjet machine, but it was so expensive, we decided to build one. We saw the machine in use in a demonstration. The price was $150,000, but they didn't tell us you need to buy another $100,000 worth of accessories. We bought a used pump and built it slowly between jobs for about 1 1/2 years and it cost us about $70,000. We still use it. Two years ago we bought a new one for $250,000. And we don't need to pay for maintenance because we learned how to do it ourselves.

"On Cahuenga and Franklin we did a 30-foot glass 'Hollywood' sign. It's prism-shaped with fiber optic lighting, and stainless steel stainless steel: see steel.
