Scroll-style paintings.


The Chinese developed the hanging scroll format in the 14th century. Typically, artists used ink and water-based colors on silk or paper mounted on silk. Hanging scrolls were not permanently hung rather they were unrolled and viewed sometimes weekly or seasonally. Hanging scrolls were framed with paper-backed silk on all four sides. A variety of piecing formats can be seen throughout the years.

After looking at many examples of Chinese and Japanese scroll paintings scroll painting

Art form practiced primarily in the Far East. The two dominant types are the Chinese landscape scroll and the Japanese narrative scroll. China's greatest contribution to the history of painting, the landscape hand scroll, reached its greatest period in the
, my high school students began thinking about making their own scroll-style paintings.

Preparing the Scroll

To construct the scroll, students measured and cut their piece of unprimed canvas into a 20" x 64" (51 x 163 cm) strip. I gave each student a handout with measurements for laying out the painting area and the fabric trim. Following traditional proportions, the edge of the painting area began 4" (10 cm) from each side, thus the painting area was 12" (31 cm) wide. The length of the painting area was 35" (89 cm), beginning 16" (41 cm) from the top and ending 13" (33 cm) from the bottom. The painting area was primed with gesso ges·so

Painting the Scroll

In developing the imagery for the painting, I stressed asymmetry Asymmetry

Framing with Fabric

When the painting was finished, students worked on the fabric frame for the scroll. They could use either one type of fabric or several. The project required that fabric cover the top, sides, and bottom of the canvas to frame the painting. After selecting their fabric, they measured, cut, and pinned it to the canvas. Students then used a sewing machine sewing machine, device that stitches cloth and other materials. An attempt at mechanical sewing was made in England (1790) with a machine having a forked, automatic needle that made a single-thread chain. In 1830, B.  to piece the fabric together.

The top of the scroll was completed with a piece of wood glued and stapled to the back of the canvas and ribbon staples behind the wood. The bottom hem was either glued or sewn with the cardboard tube fitting snuggly. The ends of the tube were painted a matching or neutral color.

Assessing the Project

In order to grade the projects, I considered the artistry of assembling the fabric, wood, and cardboard tube to the canvas. I graded the paintings both on appropriateness to the project and degree of expression and presentation.
