ScotiaMcLeod Inc. Engaged as Financial Advisor; Further Drilling Results from Udon Thani-Project; Feasibility Studies Commence.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 19, 1996-- Asia Pacific Resources Ltd. is pleased to announce that it has engaged ScotiaMcLeod Inc. to assist it in evaluating the financing alternatives available for the development of the Udon Thani Udon Thani (Thai: อุดรธานี) is a city in the north-east of Thailand (Isan). It has a population of 142,670.  potash potash: see potassium carbonate.

ScotiaMcLeod will also provide general corporate finance services during the development period.

The experience and qualifications of ScotiaMcLeod will be of great benefit to the company as it proceeds with the development of the Udon Thani potash project.

FURTHER DRILLING RESULTS.

Drilling and seismic programs continue at the project area in northeast Thailand. At present, programs are concentrating upon three important aspects.

Holes 95-63, 64, 68, 69, 71 and 72 all intersected a significant sylvinite bed in thickness ranging from about 6 meters to near 20 meters. Data from holes 63, 64, 65 and 68 was the subject of a News Release issued in December, 1995.

Hole 95-69, located approximately 1 km north of hole 95-63 intersected approximately 7.4 metres of sylvinite at a depth of 217 meters.

The influence of a northern east-west trending ridge can be seen from the results of holes 66, 67 and 78. In hole 78 the ridge has elevated the lower salt to a shallow 60 meters and in holes 66 and 67 the ridge has produced extensive thickening thick·en·ing

ridge-like structure located between holes 63 and 72 and between holes 64 and 79 as well as north proximal to 75 has had the effect of accumulating significant potash north of the ridge with thinner potash accumulation on the southern flank. Secondary replacement textures in the drill core would appear to explain the lack of significant potash on the southern flank of the ridge.

The partial halite halite

Naturally occurring sodium chloride (NaCl), common or rock salt. Halite occurs on all continents, in beds that range from a few feet to more than 1,000 ft (300 m) in thickness.
replacement of sylvinite is evident in these holes, as in holes 52, 50, 29 and 27 from earlier programs. It would appear that rising ridges of lower salt have created a situation conducive to sylvite sylvite: see potassium chloride.  solution and halite re-precipitation some time during the period of potash development.

Hole 95-72, drilled to the south of the ridge, encountered 21 meters of sylvinite at a depth of 307 meters. The drill core shows partial sylvinite replacement by salt in the upper part underlain un·der·lain

by 7.3 meters of high grade sylvinite.

Hole 95-73, approximately 1.0 km south of hole 95-72, however, shows near total replacement of sylvinite by salt, where intercepted at a depth of 285 meters.

Hole 95-75, drilled south of the ridge and 2 km southeast of hole 95-72, encountered potash at 287 meters and shows similar features to hole 95-72, in that partial alteration of the sylvinite has occurred by solution replacement. The upper 9 meters is a series of thin interbedded salt and sylvinite beds resting on a 2 meter bed of high grade sylvinite.

Hole 95-77, over 1.5 km south of hole 95-75, intercepted 9 meters of sylvinite at a depth of 338 meters but shows evidence of solution replacement throughout.

Hole 95-76 was drilled to provide an understanding of the nature of the southern ridge. Drill core showed an interesting salt flowage flow·age

pattern which illustrates the pressures that produced the ridge but no significant sylvinite was intersected.

Hole 95-74 encountered drilling difficulties and will be moved to a new location that has yet to be selected.

Hole 95-71, which is centrally located about 4 km north of hole 95-62, is very significant in that three separate sylvinite intervals were present, and as such resembles hole K-83 completed by the Thailand Department of Mineral Resources Noun 1. mineral resources - natural resources in the form of minerals

as part of their initial exploration program in the early 1980's. In descending order these intervals contained medium to high grade intervals of 1.8 meters at 236 meters; 6.9 meters at 319 meters and 6.4 meters at 393 meters, respectively.

Hole 95-70, located about 1.5 km southeast of 95-71, was quite shallow and intercepted the lower salt stratum stratum /stra·tum/ (strat´um) (stra´tum) pl. stra´ta   [L.] a layer or lamina.

at a depth of 95 meters. As was found in similar shallow drillholes, no sylvinite was present.

The company now has five drill rigs operating in the recon fields to continue with the exploration program and provide the soils investigation requirements of the feasibility study The analysis of a problem to determine if it can be solved effectively. The operational (will it work?), economical (costs and benefits) and technical (can it be built?) aspects are part of the study. Results of the study determine whether the solution should be implemented. . Present field programs include up to 200 km of seismic surveys and some 50 diamond drill holes. These programs should be completed by June, 1996.

FEASIBILITY STUDIES COMMENCE

Following technical visits to the project location by Golders Associates and H.A. Simons, feasibility studies have now commenced at Udon Thani. An additional drilling rig has been secured to carry out geotechnical field programs during the next eight weeks or so, and other geological, hydrological hy·drol·o·gy

and associated field programs will also be completed prior to May, 1996.

The Udon Thani project is located in northeast Thailand, and Asia Pacific Resources presently holds a 62.5 percent interest in the project. Thai Central Chemical Co. Ltd. holds a 27.5 percent interest with the balance being held by the Government of Thailand. -0-
