Scorecard: 2005-06 first quarter highlights.


THE CHAMBER IS THE STATE'S LEADING CATALYST FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Detroit Regional Economic Partnership staff and volunteer initiatives resulted in 6 completed projects and 7 business expansions for a total $73 million in new investments in our region and 569 new jobs.

The Chamber and Partnership took the lead in an effort that resulted in legislation to expand the Michigan Economic Growth Authority Act.

We worked with the Super Bowl XL Host Committee and other organizations on a variety of projects related to the upcoming Super Bowl.

THE CHAMBER IS THE REGION'S PREMIER ADVOCATE FOR ALL BUSINESS AND QUALITY-OF-LIFE ISSUES

Our Government Relations team aggressively advocated for the Chamber-developed Job Providers Bill of Rights, a package of bills that would help business taxpayers when dealing with the Michigan Department of Treasury.

The Chamber PAC identified and supported pro-business candidates for the Detroit City Council and Detroit School Board. 75 percent of PAC-endorsed candidates made it through the primary election.

We endorsed a telecommunications policy and lobbied the Legislature for legislation to update the Michigan Telecommunications Act There are several laws named the Telecommunications Act
  • Telecommunications Act of 1996 in the United States
  • Telecommunications Act (Canada)
  • Telecommunications Act 1997 in Australia
 and make it more competitive.

We provided member input on the Great Lakes Great Lakes, group of five freshwater lakes, central North America, creating a natural border between the United States and Canada and forming the largest body of freshwater in the world, with a combined surface area of c.95,000 sq mi (246,050 sq km).  Water Use Annex an·nex

MEMBERSHIP IN THE CHAMBER IS A BOTTOM-LINE IMPERATIVE FOR BUSINESSES

Our first-ever Michigan Technology Conference, in partnership with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and Automation Alley Automation Alley is a technology business association located in Southeast Michigan, U.S.A., primarily in Oakland County. Since its founding in 1999, Automation Alley has expanded to encompass an eight county area that includes business, educational institutions, and government , showcased high-tech trends and how they integrate within the business community.

We added Absolute Shreds and MichiganMall.com as affinity partners/member benefits. We now have 223 chambers nationwide in the Office Depot Office Depot (NYSE: ODP) is one of the world's leading suppliers of office products and services. The Company's selection of brand name office supplies includes business machines, computers, computer software and office furniture, while its business services encompass copying,  program.

More than 300 members and 20 exhibitors joined us for our Membership Reception at Experiencia (Gold-level member) in Taylor.

The Grosse Pointe Grosse Pointe (grōs point), name referring to five residential suburbs of Detroit, Wayne co., SE Mich. They include the city of Grosse Pointe (1990 pop. 5,681), inc. 1879; Grosse Pointe Farms, city (1990 pop. 10,092), inc. 1893, on Lake St.  Chamber joined the Southeast Michigan Southeast Michigan, also called Southeastern Michigan, is a region in the Lower Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan that is home to a majority of the state's businesses and industries, and is home to slightly over half the state's population.  Chamber Alliance, bringing the membership total to 56.

THE CHAMBER IS THE HUB OF LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

In partnership with Ann Arbor-based Nonprofit Enterprise at Work (NEW), we launched BoardConnect SE, a new leadership program to connect Southeast Michigan's nonprofit organizations Nonprofit Organization

An association that is given tax-free status. Donations to a non-profit organization are often tax deductible as well.

Notes:
Examples of non-profit organizations are charities, hospitals and schools.
 to a pool of trained prospective board members from small to mid-sized businesses.

Our 2004 Small Business Conference received the "Best of Show" Award in the 21st Annual Awards for Communication Excellence (ACE) sponsored by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives.

We were a winner in the "Cool Places to Work" contest sponsored by Crain's Detroit Business, the Grand Rapids Business Journal The Grand Rapids Business Journal is a weekly business newspaper concentrating on Grand Rapids, Michigan and the surrounding area. It is published by Gemini Publications which also publishes Grand Rapids magazine, Grand Rapids Family magazine, Michigan Golf, Michigan BLUE , the American Society of Employers and the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth.
