Scientists available to speak at classrooms and community groups.K-12 science teachers can help make a wide range of scientific topics come alive for students by using the Biomedical Research Issues Speakers Bureau, an established community outreach program sponsored by UCSD UCSD University of California, San Diego (La Jolla, California) UCSD User Centered System Design UCSD Urbana-Champaign Sanitary District (Illinois) UCSD Ultra Cool Sexy Dudes . The Speakers Bureau also makes UCSD biomedical bi·o·med·i·cal adj. 1. Of or relating to biomedicine. 2. Of, relating to, or involving biological, medical, and physical sciences. scientists available to community groups throughout San Diego County. The speakers program brings biomedical researchers from UCSD to area classrooms and community group meetings to share the latest in biological and medical topics through informative presentations and demonstrations. Another aim of the Speakers Bureau is to help increase science literacy science literacy A general term for the awareness a person or the public has of basic scientific facts, concepts, and theories among students and to enhance their interest in pursuing science careers. UCSD researchers and physicians are available to speak on the role of biomedical research in such timely areas as: * Gene therapy * Heart, lung, and kidney transplantation Kidney Transplantation Definition Kidney transplantation is a surgical procedure to remove a healthy, functioning kidney from a living or brain-dead donor and implant it into a patient with non-functioning kidneys. * Cancer drug therapy * Stem cell stem cell In living organisms, an undifferentiated cell that can produce other cells that eventually make up specialized tissues and organs. There are two major types of stem cells, embryonic and adult. research * Eye disease * Childhood/adolescent depression * AIDS and the immune system immune system Cells, cell products, organs, and structures of the body involved in the detection and destruction of foreign invaders, such as bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells. Immunity is based on the system's ability to launch a defense against such invaders. * The brain's role in memory and learning * Drug and alcohol addiction Other topics include: research animals and their care, careers in science and medicine, and how animal research continues to contribute to advancements in burn therapy, reproductive medicine, psychiatric disorders, diabetes, hypertension, multiple sclerosis, and veterinary medicine veterinary medicine, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of animals. An early interest in animal diseases is found in ancient Greek writings on medicine. Veterinary medicine began to achieve the stature of a science with the organization of the first school in the . Members also are available to speak at Science Career Days, to assist students with science fairs and other special projects, and to conduct lab tours (for groups of 5-15). Speakers Bureau presenters are skilled at communicating scientific information to young learners and adults in a meaningful way, and speaking engagements can be scheduled to accommodate class and community group meeting schedules. Talks range from 45 minutes to an hour, and include audio-visuals, topic handouts, and a question-and-answer period.
