MICHAEL SHERMER

Shermer is a devoted skeptic. In columns for The Skeptic, which he publishes, and Scientific American Scientific American

, he regularly picks apart ideas that are dubious but nevertheless widely held. In these 14 essays, which originally appeared in those two publications and others, Shermer considers how "science operates under pressure, during controversy, under siege, and on the precipice of the known." . With little preparation and improvisation, Shermer led several people to believe that he was talking to their dead loved ones. The serious downside was the emotional response that he got from his subjects. In another entry, he picks apart intelligent-design theory, creationists' movement to acknowledge some scientific basis of our existence but retain the notion that a divine hand has guided nature. Some of the essays are personal. For instance, Shermer explains how his experience as a professional bicycle racer gave him insight into what's known and unknown about the mind's role in athletic performance. He also celebrates the life of his late fellow skeptic Stephen Jay Gould Noun 1. Stephen Jay Gould - United States paleontologist and popularizer of science (1941-2002)
