Science 5-11; a guide for teachers, 2d ed.9780415480451 Science 5-11; a guide for teachers, 2d ed. Ed. by Alan Howe et al. Routledge 2009 239 pages $37.95 Paperback LB1585 Rather than presenting a prescriptive model for teaching science, this book for pre- and in-service teachers explains approaches and strategies that teachers can adapt and use in their own classes. The first chapter considers the aims of primary science, and introduces the authors' view of the nature of science and science inquiry. There is also a full discussion of the importance of dialogue between teachers and learners. The bulk of the book explores teaching specific topics, such as electricity, light, materials, and the Earth. Each of these chapters overviews key concepts for primary grades, gives ideas for cross- curricular planning and formative assessment, and details specific different forms inquiry can take with the topic, such as pattern-seeking, testing an explanation, and classification. Each chapter also provides a range of activities that can support children's learning, along with suggestions for cross-curricular development with areas including citizenship, language, and math. Chapter notes on ICT describe hardware (cameras, microscopes, data loggers) and recommended software and other resources available via the Internet. Notes on classroom management and safety are also included. Howe is co-program leader for undergraduate education studies at Bath Spa University. ([c]2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR) |
