School bus crashes in Minnesota

A school bus crashed into a sports utility vehicle while trying to stop at a red light, and several children were hurt, authorities said.

One student and the SUV driver were in critical condition, authorities said. The school district estimated about eight to 12 children were injured.

The bus was on its way to McKinley Elementary School and making a turn when it struck the SUV waiting at a red light, said Sheriff's Capt. Dave Jenkins. The bus driver had tried to brake, but the brakes apparently didn't work.

A station wagon was also heavily damaged in the crash, but it wasn't immediately clear how.

Spokesman Brett Johnson said the extent of injuries was unclear, but at least three children were being evaluated at hospitals.
